A Bad Summer for Auto Thefts: Edina Police Step Up Night Patrols
Auto thefts in June and July are up 55 percent over last summer.

With auto thefts in Edina up dramatically compared with last summer, police are increasing nighttime patrols, placing more unmarked squad cars and bicycles on city streets.
In June and July, there were 33 residential thefts in Edina—55 percent more than during the same period in 2012. The total loss was more than $23,000, Edina police said.
Almost three quarters of the summer thefts—24—were from unlocked or open vehicles.

“Remember to remove all valuables from your vehicle—including the garage door opener—and lock your doors,” Edina’s crime prevention specialist, Molly Anderson, said in a statement. “Exterior garage lighting is a good idea, too. Don’t hesitate to call 9-1-1 if you see or hear anything suspicious.”
