Bicycle Crash, Arcing Power Lines Among Latest Fire Calls

The Edina Fire Department's weekly activity report for April 11-17.

The responded to the following incidents during the week of April 11-17:

April 11

  • Eight responses by paramedic firefighters for Emergency Medical Service.
  • A smoke haze was reported in the 7600 block of Parklawn Avenue and firefighters arrived to investigate. The light haze was found to be similar to a florescent light ballast malfunction and the area was checked with a thermal imaging camera for unusual heat signatures. No hazards were found and the haze was vented from the building and did not return. 
  • A report of smoke produced by illegally burning yard waste was investigated in the 6300 block of Mildred Avenue. The resident was instructed and the fire was extinguished. 
  • Firefighters investigated a reported smoke smell at an apartment in the 7200 block of York Avenue. A piece of plastic was found to have melted onto the heating element of a dishwasher. 
  • One false fire alarm was reported.

April 12

  • Nine EMS incidents.
  • A bicyclist and vehicle collided, causing injuries to the bicyclist at the intersection of Blake Road and Maloney Avenue.
  • A fire was reported in a window of a nearby building in the area of the 7700 block of Cahill Road. Firefighters and Edina Police investigated, but no fire was found. It is suspected that a lamp reflecting off of the glass window could have been mistaken for flames.
  • Smoke was reported in the area of the 6300 block of Rolf Avenue. A recreational fire was found to be the cause.

April 13

  • Eight EMS responses.
  • A contractor digging in the area of Valley View Road and Sally Lane hit a gas supply line with a hand shovel, causing a leak. Firefighters blocked off traffic on Valley View until the gas company arrived and repaired the leak. 
  • A resident in the 5600 block of McGuire Road reported a roaring sound coming from the chimney of a fireplace. He was concerned and wanted firefighters to check it out. The engine crew checked all levels of the home and the fireplace chimney with a thermal imaging camera and found no signs of fire.
  • A carbon monoxide alarm malfunction was checked in the 6900 block of Cornelia Drive. Low batteries were found to be the reason for the alarm chirping.
  • One false fire alarm was reported.

April 14

  • Nine EMS responses by paramedic firefighters.

April 15

  • Eight EMS incidents.
  • Paramedics assisted with a vehicle crash with injuries on Interlachen Boulevard and Blake Road.
  • An electrical burning smell was reported in the 7700 block of Tanglewood Court. Firefighters investigated and found an overheated refrigerator compressor to be the cause of the odor and disconnected the power to the refrigerator.
  • A false fire alarm was reported.

April 16

  • Six EMS calls.

April 17

  • Five EMS responses.
  • Firefighters investigated arcing power lines on the 6800 block of Sally Lane. A pine tree had fallen onto the power lines in a wooded area and the electric company was notified.
