Block Parties Sweeping Edina for Night to Unite 2012
Night to Unite—also known as National Night Out—is aimed at encouraging residents to spend the evening getting to know their neighbors under the common goal of keeping communities safer.
A smattering a block parties will be taking place throughout Edina from 6-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 7, as the city celebrates Night to Unite.
Night to Unite—also known as National Night Out—is aimed at encouraging residents to spend the evening getting to know their neighbors under the common goal of keeping communities safer. Residents are encouraged to lock their doors, turn on their outside lights and spend some time outdoors with their neighbors.
Sponsored by the Minnesota Crime Prevention Association and local law enforcement, it also serves as a chance for residents to meet local police officers and engage with them.

"The police department enjoys the opportunity to see our residents in a casual setting," said Edina Chief of Police Jeff Long. "At the parties we attend, people get to see all of the equipment in our cars, ask questions and engage in conversation with one of the department representatives."
The will be hosting a celebration of its own from 6-8 p.m. at , which will include a meet-and-greet with police officers and a police K-9. Residents will be able to get their photo taken in a squad car, play a variety of games and free goody bags, snacks and beverages will also be available.

Nearly 100 Night to Unite block parties were registered with the city in 2011, according to officials.
Edina Police are available to attend parties throughout the city, though resources are somewhat limited. Residents can RSVP for the Police Department's party or get more information on Night to Unite by contacting coordinator Aimee Canepa at 952-826-0473 or acanepa@EdinaMN.gov.
