Broken Sprinkler System at Fairview Southdale Draws Firefighters
The Edina Fire Department's weekly activity report for Oct. 10-16.

The responded to the following incidents during the week of Oct. 10-16:
Oct. 10
- A plastic laundry basket set on a stove top caught fire and was extinguished by the homeowner after being alerted by a neighbor in the 6000 block of Zenith Avenue. Smoke was clearing when firefighters arrived. They checked the area with thermal imaging cameras and found no additional heat.
- Paramedic firefighters performed Emergency Medical Service in eleven responses.
- A vehicle crash with injuries occurred on France Avenue at West 58th Street.
- A specially trained paramedic firefighter was called in to assist St. Louis Park Police.
- One false fire alarm was reported.

- 12 EMS incidents.
- A vehicle crash with injuries occurred in a parking lot in the 7300 block of France Avenue.
- A vehicle hit a pedestrian on France Avenue at Plaza Drive.
- A resident burning brush was instructed that this was not allowed and the fire was extinguished.
- A reported car fire on Hwy. 100 at West 50th Street was found to be an engine malfunction, no fire.
- A possible natural gas odor was checked in the 4200 block of Crocker Avenue. Several driveways in the area had been recently sealed, creating a chemical smell. No gas was detected.
- Three false fire alarms were reported.
Oct. 12
- Six EMS incidents.
- A vehicle crash with injuries occurred on Hwy. 62 at France Avenue.
- Paramedics responded to two separate vehicle crashes, where there was property damage but no injuries. One occurred on West 58th Street at Xerxes Avenue and the other on Hwy. 62 near France Avenue.
- Smoke was reported by a passerby in the 6900 block of Antrim Avenue. Firefighters found a resident grilling in the backyard.
- Firefighters checked the underground parking area of an apartment building in the 6600 block of Vernon Avenue when smoke was reported. Lingering vehicle exhaust was found to be the source and was ventilated from the garage.

- Eight EMS incidents.
Oct. 14
- Five EMS responses.
- A pedestrian was hit by a vehicle in a parking lot in the 4100 block of West 76th Street.
- A person skateboarding was hit by a vehicle near the intersection of France Avenue and West 65th Street.
Oct. 15
- Eight EMS incidents.
- The road construction crew working in the area of the 8000 block of West 78th Street hit a natural gas line. The road work had to be stopped and traffic had to be diverted from the road, which was the temporary ramp from I-494 to northbound Hwy. 169. Office buildings in the area were monitored for natural gas until Centerpoint Energy arrived to repair the gas line.
- A recreational fire was checked and found to be following regulations outlined in the Recreational Fires Permit (available online at www.cityofedina.com/fire).
- One false fire alarm malfunction was investigated.
Oct. 16
- Five EMS calls.
- A smell of natural gas and flames seen from a water heater were investigated in the 7500 block of Braemar Boulevard. Firefighters turned the gas off to the malfunctioning water heater and advised seeking service for the unit.
- A water flow alarm brought firefighters to . A broken fire sprinkler pipe was found in the Emergency Department garage bay. A garage door wheel assembly popped off the track and hit a branch line. An isolation valve shut down the water flow and maintenance was advised to contact a contractor to get the fire protection system back in service.
- A fire alarm at an apartment building on the 6400 block of Barrie Road was investigated. Smoke from a malfunctioning elevator motor was found to be the cause of the alarm. Maintenance was advised to seek repair.
- A possible car fire on Hwy. 100 at Benton Avenue was found to be an engine overheating, there was no fire.
