Cleaning Crew Pours Bleach in Tub, Creates Gas Odor

The Edina Fire Department's weekly activity report for Feb. 13-19.

The  responded to the following incidents during the week of Feb. 13-19:

Monday, Feb. 13

  • Firefighters extinguished a fire in a construction dumpster at the site of a house under construction in the 5500 block of Park Place. A neighbor spotted the fire and called 9-1-1. No fire damage to the house was noted.
  • Paramedic firefighters responded to 16 incidents requiring emergency medical service.
  • A crash with injuries occurred on France Avenue at West 65th Street. Paramedics provided emergency medical service.
  • An ambulance and an engine crew attended to a vehicle crash with injuries on Tracy Avenue at Ridgeway Drive.
  • An ambulance and an engine were sent to a vehicle crash on southbound Hwy. 100 on the ramp to West 70th Street, but there were no injuries.
  • Firefighters investigated a reported odor of natural gas in the 6000 block of Wooddale Avenue. No levels were measured by firefighters. Centerpoint Energy was en route to check out a possible furnace malfunction. 

Tuesday, Feb. 14

  • Paramedic firefighters responded to 16 incidents requiring emergency medical service. 
  • A vehicle crash on Hwy. 100 at Hwy. 62 was investigated. There were no injuries.

Wednesday, Feb. 15

  • Eight responses were for emergency medical service calls.
  • A smell of natural gas was reported in the area of Hwy. 100 and Hwy. 62 by a driver. The area was checked by firefighters, but no odor was found. 
  • One false fire alarm was investigated in the 4800 block of West Sunnyslope Road.

Thursday, Feb. 16

  • Thirteen incidents required emergency medical service by paramedics.
  • A false fire alarm was due to a key code error in the 4600 block of Merilane.

Friday, Feb. 17

  • There were 10 emergency medical service responses by paramedics.
  • An engine crew and an ambulance crew responded to a vehicle crash with injuries on the ramp from West 50th Street to northbound Hwy. 100.
  • A vehicle crash with injuries occurred on southbound Hwy. 100 at West 50th Street.
  • An excavating crew hit a gas line in the front yard of a home in the 5500 block of Park Place. The line had been marked, but the depth was misjudged by the back hoe operator. Firefighters and police notified homes in the immediate area and cordoned off the streets. The gas company arrived and repaired the leak. 
  • Firefighters responded to a home in the 7400 block of West Shore Drive to investigate a reported natural gas odor. Investigation found that a cleaning crew had poured bleach in a bathtub that mixed with an unknown product in the drain, creating the odor that was mistaken for natural gas. No gas was detected using fire department gas monitors. The area was ventilated by opening windows. 
  • A carbon monoxide alarm malfunction was checked in the 5200 block of Richmond Drive. The homeowner was advised to replace the alarm with a digital readout type of alarm. 
  • Four false fire alarms were reported.

Saturday, Feb. 18

  • Paramedics responded to nine emergency medical service incidents.
  • A recreational fire complaint was followed up.

Sunday, Feb. 19

  • Eleven incidents required emergency medical service.
  • Firefighters investigated a water flow alarm at a business in the 7200 block of Bush Lake Road. A leak in the fire sprinkler system was found and relayed to the building manager, who will seek service of the system.
