Dragging Drive Shaft Ignites Vegetation Under Car on Hwy. 100

The Edina Fire Department's weekly activity report for Jan. 9-15.

The  responded to the following incidents during the week of Jan. 9-15:

 Monday, Jan. 9

  • Firefighters extinguished a fire underneath a vehicle on Hwy. 100 at Edina Industrial Blvd. Mechanical failures in the engine compartment of the vehicle and the drive shaft dragging on the ground caused sparks that ignited vegetation underneath the car. 
  • Paramedic firefighters responded to seven incidents that required emergency medical service.
  • Two false fire alarms were investigated.

Tuesday, Jan. 10

  • The Hopkins Fire Department requested mutual aid assistance for a house fire in the 400 block of Blake Road.
  • Paramedics responded to six calls requiring EMS.
  • Firefighters responded to the 6500 block of Sherwood Avenue to investigate an odor of smoke. A slight electronic burning odor was found in one room, but no source was found. No readings were found using gas monitors. 
  • A fire alarm and reported smoke on the second floor of an assisted living facility in the 7400 block of York Avenue brought firefighters and paramedics to the scene. Staff on site reported they were beginning to evacuate residents. Crews from neighboring St. Louis Park and Richfield also were called to begin responding for possible mutual aid. The source, burnt popcorn was found on the second floor. Mutual aid crews were cancelled.

Wednesday, Jan. 11

  • Nine responses were for emergency medical service.
  • 9-1-1 was called when two carbon monoxide alarms sounded in a home in the 4500 block of Sedum Lane. Levels of carbon monoxide were measured in the basement family room and an adjacent utility room. Firefighters suspected a gas fireplace log set to be the source of the carbon monoxide. The house was ventilated and levels dropped. The gas company was contacted to investigate. 

Thursday, Jan. 12

  • 19 responses by paramedics for emergency medical service. 
  • An odor of natural gas was reported in an office building in the 6300 block of France Avenue. Firefighters arrived, but found no levels of gas using gas monitors. The boiler room was also checked. The gas company was contacted to follow up. 
  • One false fire alarm was found to be a system malfunction in the 7500 block of Ikola Way. 

Friday, Jan. 13

  • There were five incidents requiring emergency medical service.
  • A vehicle crash on Hwy. 62 at France Avenue was found to be property damage only. The ambulance was cleared, but the engine and crew stayed on the scene to control traffic. 
  • Gasoline leaking from a vehicle was reported in a parking lot in the 7000 block of York Avenue. Firefighters plugged the leak and used absorbent material to control the spill. 
  • A reported car fire on Hwy. 62 at Hwy. 100 was the result of an engine overheating. Police cancelled the fire department en route. 

Saturday, Jan. 14

  • 10 responses by paramedics provided needed emergency medical service.
  • A vehicle crash and rollover with injuries occurred on Hwy. 169 at Hwy. 212. An ambulance and engine were sent to the scene for emergency medical service.
  • Two false fire alarms were reported.

Sunday, Jan. 15

  • There were nine EMS incidents. 
  • An odor of natural gas was reported in the 5800 block of Johnson Drive. The owner states the odor was strongest by the door from the garage into the basement. No gas was detected or measured in the garage or the basement. Empty propane bottles were found and had been recently used in the garage.
  • Kids were reported to be starting a fire in the woods in the area of the 4400 block of Vandervork Avenue. Edina police arriving on the scene reported no fire and cancelled the fire department en route.
