Hornets Stumble on Path to State Title

Edina's girls hockey team will play in the third place game after a 4-1 loss in the semifinals.

Following a tough 4-1 loss to Roseville, the girls hockey team's dreams of caputuring a state title were dashed for the fourth consecutive year.

The game started out as a tough defensive battle, with neither the Hornets nor the Raiders managing a goal in the first period.

Roseville's Sarah Knowlton finally managed to sneak one past goalie Maddie Dahl late in the second period, during a Raiders power play. The Raiders kept the pressure on, as Kate Flug and Jordan Capeti scored a second and third goal within a two-minute span bridging the second and third periods.

The Hornets recovered midway through the third period on a power play goal by senior Anna Bartz, but Roseville put the game away with a Kate Flug power play goal of their own late in the third.

This was the fourth straight year the Hornets made the state tournament, though the team has never managed to secure the elusive state title. They are set to play in the third place game against Lakeville North at 4 p.m. today, Feb. 25, at the Xcel Energy Center.
