Hornets Advance to State Semifinals with 3-2 Win

Edina defeated the Mounds View Mustangs to advance to Friday's semifinal game.

The girls hockey team is headed to the semifinals of the state tournament after defeating the Mounds View Mustangs 3-2 Thursday, Feb. 23.

Things were quiet throughout the first period, with neither team managing a goal. Junior Forward Liz Trautz kicked off a flurry of second period scoring, but the Mustangs quickly countered with a goal of their own.

Senior Defender Lizzy Otten and Junior Forward Sarah Nielsen notched back-to-back scores for the Hornets quickly thereafter, closing out the second period with the Hornets up 3-1.

Mounds View scored a final goal with a little more than a minute left in the third period to make it 3-2, but the Hornets were able to hang on for the win.

Edina had a total of 23 shots on goal to Mounds View's 10.

The Hornets now advance to a semifinal game against Roseville Area High School at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, at the Xcel Energy Center. The Hornets lost to Roseville two years ago in the state title game. When the two teams met earlier this season, they skated to a 2-2 tie.

Edina (19-4-6) was a No. 3 seed in the tournament. 

The girls have been runner-up in the state tournament for the past two years, most recently  to Lake Conference rival Minnetonka.
