Edina Senior Wins Individual Alpine Skiing State Championship

EDINA, MN — Edina senior Adam Berghult capped his high school skiing career with a dominant race to win the boys alpine skiing state title last week.

Berghult “led from start to finish” during the race Feb. 16 at Giants Ride near Biwabik and was a clear favorite as soon as he strapped on his skis, according to a report by the Minnesota State High School League.

Berghult was out for redemption at the 2022 state meet, after he fell and was disqualified during his second run at the 2021 meet, the report states.

He won with a combined time of 1 minutes, 12.25 seconds after both runs, just beating out West Lutheran junior Josh Nelson, who finished in second with a time of 1:12:56, according to statistics from the MSHSL.

Edina senior Will Utendorfer earned a third-place finish with a final combined time of 1:13:75, statistics show.

Berghult is the sixth Edina skier to win an individual state title and the first to complete the feat since Jamie Engelking in 1993, MSHSL reported.

He told the MSHSL that “everything just kind of fell into place for it to be a great day of racing,” and thanked those who played “a valuable role in making it happen.”

Edina High School finished second, losing out on the alpine skiing team championship to Minnetonka. Minnetonka earned 170 team points, while Edina earned 144 points. Eden Prairie finished third in the team standings, with 131 points.
