Edina Soccer Teams Win Sectionals, Advance To State Championships

Edina High's girls and boys soccer teams booked their places in the state championship tournament by downing Minnetonka on Tuesday.

EDINA, MN — The Edina High School girls and boys soccer teams will start their quest for state championships next week after both defeated Minnetonka on Tuesday night to win sectional titles.

The Edina girls soccer team took down Minnetonka 5-0 Tuesday at Prior Lake High School to maintain its perfect record for the season. The girls team has now won all 18 of its games this season.

They have scored 91 goals this season while giving up just six goals, according to MN Soccer Hub.

The Edina and Minnetonka boys teams held each other scoreless across 100 minutes of play Tuesday night, including two overtime periods, sending the game to penalty kicks. Edina prevailed 3-2 on penalties to book its place in the state tournament, the Chanhassen Villager reports.

Quarterfinals in the state tournament are set to be held from Oct. 26-28, with semifinals on Nov. 3 and the final on Nov. 6 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.

Edina High School is due to host quarterfinal games on Oct. 26 and Oct. 28, according to the Minnesota State High School League.

The Edina High School boys soccer team has won four state championships, including a three-peat between from 1999-2001. It won its most recent state title in 2019.

The Minnesota state tournament was not held in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
