Edina Swimmers Take Second Place at State Meet

At the state swimming and diving championship this weekend, it was a Lake Conference dominated medal stand.

The Edina Hornets came in second place at the conclusion of the 2013 championship meet, behind neighboring Eden Prairie and ahead of Minnetonka. The Hornets combined for 237 points during the competition, with state champion performances in both the 200 IM and 400 Free Relay.

Edina's own Jackson Lindell took first in the 200 IM with a time of 1:51.43, while the foursome of Buzz Rehnberg, Sean Satterthwaite, Jackson Lindell and Erick Huft combined to take the state title in the 400 Free with a time of 3:06.00. Both the group and Lindell also set team records for Edina at the state meet.

Elsewhere, Buzz Rehnberg set a team record in the 50 Free (0:20.87) and Erick Huft earned a team record in the 500 free (4:27.61).

The team earned Automatic All-America status in the 200 Medley Relay, 200 Free, 200 IM, 500 Free and 400 Free Relay, with All-America consideration in the 50 Free and 200 Free Relay.

Perhaps most fascinating of all, the event's 500 Free saw three performances all under Minnesota's all-time record of 4:28.00, set all the way back in 1995 by Olympian Tom Malchow. While Mounds View's Noah Lucas now holds the record at 4:26.47, Eden Prairie's Jonathan Lieberman (4:26.78) and Edina's Erick Huft (4:27.61) also broke the long-standing record.
