Engine Fire Destroys Truck, Damages Nearby Building

The Edina Fire Department's weekly activity report for June 27-July 3.

The  responded to the following incidents during the week of June 27-July 3:

June 27

  • Firefighters responded to a fire alarm in the 4100 block of Parklawn Avenue. Oil in a pan on a stove top caught fire and the resident tried to move the pan, but left the pan on the floor. Firefighters extinguished the burning oil by placing a lid on the pan. Fire damaged surfaces around the stove and the floor. Moderate smoke was ventilated from the unit and from the hallway. 
  • Paramedic firefighters performed Emergency Medical Service in seven incidents.
  • A false fire alarm was investigated.

June 28

  • Five EMS incidents.
  • Paramedics responded to an accident with injuries on Gleason Road and Vernon Avenue involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.
  • A vehicle versus bicycle crash occurred on West 50th Street and Arden Avenue. The bicyclist was injured.
  • Two false fire alarms were reported.

June 29

  • A four-square-foot area of burning mulch was extinguished on Cooper Avenue. There was no extension to the nearby garage and the cause of the fire is unknown.
  • The smell of natural gas was reported in the area of the 6100 block of Wilryan Avenue. Firefighters investigated and located a crew from the gas company bleeding a natural gas line. 
  • Five EMS responses by paramedics.
  • Two false fire alarms.

 

June 30

  • 12 EMS incidents.
  • Paramedics responded to a vehicle crash on West 65th Street and France Avenue. There were no injuries.
  • Firefighters investigated a report of a stove making a snapping noise in the 5700 block of Long Brake Trail. The engine crew found the electric starter periodically striking. Power to the stove was shut off at the breaker panel and the resident was instructed to contact a technician for repair.   
  • Firefighters responded to the 6600 block of Dovre Drive for a partial power outage in a home. The house was checked with a thermal imagining camera for excessive heat and there were no hazards found. The power company was responding. 
  • A home in the 5900 block of Drew Avenue was checked for a possible CO leak. No hazardous levels of carbon monoxide were measured.
  • There were four false fire alarms. 

 

July 1

  • 11 EMS responses by paramedic firefighters.
  • A smoke haze and an electrical burning smell were reported in the pool area on the 7700 block of York Avenue. Firefighters investigating found that a breaker to the pool deck lights had been tripped and suspected a burnt ballast to be the cause. An electrician arrived to repair the light. 
  • Stormy weather during the late afternoon and evening were the cause of seven calls for power lines down, sparking power lines and branches on power lines throughout Edina.   
  • A carbon monoxide alarm malfunction was investigated. A low battery was the cause. 
  • Firefighters investigated eight false fire alarms.

 

July 2

  • An engine fire in a pick-up truck parked in a maintenance bay at the bus garage in the 5200 block of Eden Avenue was discovered when firefighters responded to a fire alarm at the location. Firefighters extinguished the fire that destroyed the truck. Heat damaged the paint on a bus parked next to the truck. There was extensive smoke damage throughout the building and to several busses. Fire crews from Richfield, St. Louis Park and Eden Prairie Fire Departments responded to assist. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
  • 12 EMS incidents.
  • One false fire alarm.

 

July 3

  • 10 EMS calls.
  • A request from the St. Louis Park Fire Department for mutual aid was cancelled en route.
  • Firefighters investigated an arcing power line in the 5000 block of Interlachen Bluff and residents were cautioned to stay clear. The power company was contacted.
  • Residents were advised to keep clear of a smoking tree branch on a power line in the 5700 block of Bernard Place. The power company as called to the scene.
  • Firefighters responded to the area the Valley View Road and Wooddale Avenue for a report of smoke possibly coming from the roof of an apartment building. The area was checked and no smoke was found. 
  • One false fire alarm was investigated.
