Snow Plow Takes Out Gas Meter, Causes Leak

The Edina Fire Department's weekly activity report for Jan. 16-22.

The  responded to the following incidents during the week of Jan. 16-22:

Monday, Jan. 16

  • Paramedic firefighters responded to 13 incidents requiring emergency medical service.
  • Firefighters responded to the 6400 block of Josephine Avenue to check out a reported smell of smoke outside. Nothing was found. 
  • The Edina Fire Department was called to the 6100 block of Scotia Drive, when the homeowner was concerned a malfunctioning gas fireplace may be leaking. Firefighters used a gas monitor and found no levels of gas in the home. 
  • There were three false fire alarm responses.

Tuesday, Jan. 17

  • There were 10 responses requiring emergency medical service by paramedics.
  • A vehicle crash on France Avenue at Hwy. 62 was attended by an ambulance and an engine crew. There were no injuries. 
  • Firefighters investigated a reported electrical burning odor in an apartment building in the 6100 block of Lincoln Drive. The odor was found to be sewer gas coming from the drain in the laundry room. The odor disappeared when water was added to the dry trap.
  • Two false fire alarms were reported.

Wednesday, Jan. 18

  • 11 responses were for emergency medical service.
  • A vehicle crash in the 4800 block of France Avenue did not have injuries.
  • Firefighters rescued a cat stuck in a furnace air intake pipe in the 7100 block of Shannon Drive.
  • One false fire alarm was reported.

Thursday, Jan. 19

  • Paramedics responded to 10 incidents requiring emergency medical service.
  • A mutual aid request from the Richfield Fire Department was cancelled en route.
  • A reported car fire on Hwy. 100 at West 70th Street was found to be a car overheating. Police canceled the fire department en route.
  • Edina Police requested assistance entering a residence for a welfare check. 
  • Four false fire alarms were reported.

Friday, Jan. 20

  • 11 incidents required emergency medical service from paramedic firefighters.
  • Paramedics assisted at a vehicle crash with injuries on France Avenue at Hwy. 62.
  • Two reports of a strong odor were investigated on Interlachen Boulevard in the area of Blake Road and Mirror Lakes Drive. Firefighters canvased the area until they found the odor, which smelled like burning rubber. They investigated, finding a source for the odor. The gas company was en route to follow up and were advised of the location where the odor was strongest. 
  • Two false fire alarms were reported.

Saturday, Jan. 21

  • Paramedics responded to 12 incidents requiring emergency medical service.  
  • A natural gas leak was reported by a neighbor in the 5500 block of Village Drive after he heard a hissing sound. A private snow plow had struck the gas meter. Firefighters measured low levels of natural gas in the garage and lower levels in the home. The garage door was opened to ventilate until the gas company arrived to repair the meter. 
  • Food burning in an oven was reported in an apartment in the 7300 block of Gallagher Drive. Firefighters found burnt food, but no flames. A heavy haze from burnt food was ventilated from the apartment.
  • There were two false fire alarms

Sunday, Jan. 22

  • A small fire in an outdoor courtyard area was extinguished in the 7300 block of Gallagher Drive. A carelessly discarded cigarette appears to be the cause of the fire to the mulch, dead vegetation and pine needles. The fire started around a tin can on the ground that had been used as an ashtray.    
  • There were five incidents requiring emergency medical service.
  • Paramedics responded to a vehicle crash with injuries on France Avenue at West 70th Street.
  • A vehicle crash in the 6100 block of Tracy Avenue required paramedics.
  • Two false fire alarms were investigated.
