Firefighters Discover Sewer Odor Seeping into Swimming Pool

The Edina Fire Department's weekly activity report for Sept. 26-Oct. 2.

The  responded to the following incidents during the week of Sept. 26-Oct. 2:

Sept. 26

  • There were nine responses for Emergency Medical Service by paramedic firefighters.
  • Three false alarms were reported.

  • 11 EMS incidents
  • A natural gas line was cut by contractors at Pine Grove Road and West Highwood Drive. Edina police and fire shut down nearby roads. Firefighters monitored the air in nearby homes until the gas company arrived to repair the line.
  • A reported vehicle fire was actually an overheated engine on Hwy. 100 at West 50th Street. Fire units were cancelled by Highway Patrol.
  • An odor of natural gas was reported in the 4600 block of Drexel Avenue. Firefighters found the odor was caused by a swimming pool being drained into the storm sewer, which pushed out the sewer gas odor. Gas monitors found no readings of natural gas. 

Sept. 28

  • 11 EMS calls.
  • A request from the Richfield Fire Department for mutual aid for a possible house fire was cancelled en route.
  • One false fire alarm was investigated.

Sept. 29

  • 15 EMS responses.
  • A vehicle crash with injuries occurred at Hwy. 100 and Vernon Avenue.
  • Firefighters investigated a report of power out and a smoke smell in a home in the 5500 block of Concord Avenue. The electric company was on the scene to investigate a downed service line from the backyard to the house. Outlet covers that had black soot around the edges were removed. There were no active fire or heat signatures found. An electrician will have to be called to repair any damaged wiring. 
  • The St. Louis Park Fire Department requested a mutual aid response, then cancelled fire units en route.
  • A report of a power line sparking and dangling on France Avenue at West 53rd Street was cancelled by Edina Police on the scene.

Sept. 30

  • 13 EMS incidents.
  • A false fire alarm was investigated.

Oct. 1

  • Firefighters extinguished an engine fire in the 6200 block of South Knoll Drive. The owner of the vehicle reported trouble starting the vehicle and then popping noises prior to the fire. 
  • 10 EMS responses by paramedic firefighters.
  • Paramedics assisted at a vehicle crash with injuries on France Avenue and Halifax Avenue.
  • A person was trapped in an elevator in the 7100 block of France Avenue. The elevator company was responding to the scene. 
  • A mutual aid request from Richfield Fire Department was cancelled en route. 
  • One false fire alarm was reported.

Oct. 2

  • 12 EMS incidents.
