Firefighters Respond to Burnt Chair, Parking Ramp Odor

The Edina Fire Department's weekly activity report for Dec. 26 to Jan. 1.

The  responded to the following incidents during the week of Dec. 26-Jan. 1:

Dec. 26

  • Edina firefighters assisted at a structure fire in Eden Prairie in the 12400 block of Sunnybrook Road, responding to a request for mutual aid. 
  • Paramedic firefighters responded to nine incidents requiring emergency medical service.
  • Firefighters checked out a home in the 5900 block of Olinger Road for a reported odor of gas. No odor was present or detected using the gas monitor. 
  • A burn on a chair was checked for possible smoldering by firefighters in the 4000 block of Parklawn Avenue.
  • A carbon monoxide alarm was checked out in the 4700 block of Hibiscus Avenue. Low batteries were the cause of the alarm. 
  • A fire alarm malfunction was checked out in an apartment in the 6600 block of Vernon Avenue.

Dec. 27

  • There were 12 EMS incidents.
  • Paramedics and an engine crew responded to assist at a vehicle crash with injuries at the intersection of West 56th Street and France Avenue. 
  • A malfunctioning fluorescent light ballast was found to be the cause of the reported burning odor in the 6500 block of France Avenue. 

Dec. 28

  • Six EMS responses.
  • A reported dumpster fire in the 4300 block of Wooddale Avenue was cancelled en route by the St. Louis Park Fire Department. The fire was not in Edina and they did not require assistance. 
  • Three false fire alarms were reported.

  • Nine EMS calls.
  • Paramedics responded to a vehicle crash that occurred at the intersection of France Avenue at West 54th Street. There were no injuries.
  • A request from the St. Louis Park Fire Department for mutual aid was cancelled en route. 
  • Three false fire alarms were reported.

Dec. 30

  • Eight EMS incidents.
  • The odor of natural gas was reported in the parking ramp behind a restaurant in the 5000 block of France Avenue. A slight odor of natural gas was found outside the restaurant, but was not noted or detected inside the restaurant. The gas company responded and the fire department assisted the investigation of the rooftop HVAC unit. Odor was noted near the unit, but no readings were detected using gas monitors. Centerpoint Energy remained on the scene to investigate further and check for leaks, while the fire department was cleared.
  • The Hopkins Fire Department called for a mutual aid response for a possible structure fire, but cancelled Edina crews en route. 
  • Two false fire alarms were reported.

Dec. 31

  • There were 13 EMS responses.
  • A reported fire was investigated in the 5200 block of Villa Way. Tree branches were arcing on power lines, but there was no fire. A power line was down and power was out in the area. The power company was contacted and responded to the scene. 
  • Firefighters investigated the odor of natural gas that was reported at a business in the 4900 block of France Avenue. No gas odor was detected using gas monitors and the odor was suspected to be sewer gas odor coming from the floor drains. 
  • Firefighters investigated possible sparking power lines in the area of Tracy Avenue and Vernon Avenue, but did not find a problem.

Jan. 1

  • Paramedics responded to nine EMS incidents.
  • A power line arcing was investigated near the intersection of Vernon and Tracy avenues. A resident pointed out the area that had been arcing, but it was no longer arcing when fire crews arrived. The power company was contacted. Xcel Energy arrived and stated that there was too much sag in the line and that they would repair it. 
  • One false fire alarm was reported.
