Firefighters Respond to Pair of False Alarms at Middle School

The Edina Fire Department's weekly activity report for Dec. 12-18.

The  responded to the following incidents during the week of Dec. 12-18:

 Dec. 12

  • The Eden Prairie Fire Department requested mutual aid assistance for an electrical fire at a business in the 300 block of Prairie Center Drive. Edina arrived to assist with ventilation after the fire was extinguished.
  • Paramedic firefighters responded to five incidents requiring emergency medical service.

  • Firefighters assisted extinguishing a structure fire in the 4600 block of Nine Mile Creek Parkway at the request of the Bloomington Fire Department. 
  • There were three EMS incidents.
  • A fire alarm indicating water flow brought the fire department to the 6200 block of Interlachen Boulevard. A sprinkler head had activated in a maintenance building, but it was not due to fire. The fire department assisted maintenance staff in shutting off the water and the air compressor. Staff remained on site until repairs are made to the fire sprinkler system. 
  • One false fire alarm was cancelled en route. 

Dec. 14

  • 14 incidents required EMS.
  • Firefighters responded to the 5700 block of View Lane for reported smoke in the house. A charred outlet was found arcing behind the television electronics. The breaker was turned off to the outlet. 
  • Two fire alarm pull stations were maliciously pulled at . School officials were aware of the person who pulled one of the alarms. There was no fire. 

Dec. 15

  • 12 EMS responses.
  • A request from the St. Louis Park Fire Department for mutual aid assistance for a possible structure fire was cancelled en route. 
  • The fire department responded to a call for a carbon monoxide alarm sounding in the 6400 block of Mildred Avenue. A gas monitor was used and found levels of carbon monoxide throughout the home. The family was instructed to wait outside in the car until the gas company arrived to investigate. 
  • Smoke and a burning odor was reported in a retail store in the 3900 block of West 50th Street. Firefighters found the smoke haze to be coming from a breakdown of a light ballast. Power to the light was disconnected at the breaker and the tenant called building maintenance for repair. 
  • One false fire alarm was investigated.

Dec. 16

  • 12 EMS incident responses.
  • Two false fire alarms were reported.

Dec. 17

  • 10 EMS incidents.
  • Heavy smoke and a smoke odor was reported outdoors in the area of the 6400 block of Interlachen Boulevard. Firefighters arrived and smelled a fireplace fire and noted light smoke coming from a house to the west of the resident who reported the smoke. No other source for the smoke was found in the area. 
  • A false fire alarm was investigated. 

Dec. 18

  • There were nine EMS responses.
  • A resident of a home in the 3200 block of West 76th Street reported a carbon monoxide alarm. Firefighters arrived and used a gas monitor to find low level readings around the closet where the furnace and water heater were. Higher levels were measured on top of the water heater at the vent. Centerpoint Energy was called and the resident was cautioned to stay out of the townhouse until the gas company arrived. The door was left open for ventilation.
