Flaming Pickup Truck Flagged Down on Crosstown, Extinguished

The Edina Fire Department's weekly activity report for July 25-31.

The  responded to the following incidents during the week of July 25-31:

July 25

  • Fire crews responded to a mutual aid request from St. Louis Park Fire Department to assist at a garage fire in the 3700 block of Pennsylvania Avenue South.
  • Paramedic firefighters responded to 11 incidents that required Emergency Medical Service.
  • Paramedics responded to Valley View Road and West 65th Street at the site of a vehicle crash with injuries.
  • A reported fire was cancelled en route by Edina Police, who arrived first on the scene.
  • A false fire alarm was investigated.

July 26

  • A fire in the bed of a pickup truck was extinguished on east bound Hwy. 62 prior to Valley View Road. The driver was flagged down by another driver alerting him to the fire. Equipment in the pickup bed was destroyed. Damage extended into the engine from electrical wires leading from equipment to the battery in the engine compartment.
  • There were three EMS incidents.
  • Paramedics and an engine crew attended to a crash with injuries on Hwy. 62 between France and Xerxes avenues.
  • There was a crash with injuries on Hwy. 62 on the ramp to Hwy. 169 that required an ambulance and the engine crew.
  • One false fire alarm occurred.

July 27

  • A running, unoccupied vehicle rolled and crashed into an evergreen tree in the 5100 block of Mirror Lakes Drive and then started on fire. Firefighters arrived to extinguish the fire which may have started with the tree branches from the heat of the engine.
  • Two separate incidents for fires in garbage dumpsters in the 7000 block of Cornelia Drive which occurred two hours apart. Arson is suspected in both fires in the school parking lot. Edina Police are investigating.
  • 11 EMS responses.
  • Paramedics and firefighters responded to a crash between a bus and a car at the intersection of West 65th Street and France Avenue. There were no injuries.
  • A carbon monoxide alarm was reported in a condominium unit in the 6700 block of Vernon Avenue. Firefighters did find levels of carbon monoxide gas when they arrived. The resident stated that she had baked earlier in the evening. Firefighters went back inside and turned on the oven, which caused the carbon monoxide levels to rise on the gas monitor. Windows were opened and the gas was turned off to the range. The gas company arrived and cleared the fire department.
  • A request from St. Louis Park Fire Department for mutual aid was cancelled en route.
  • One false fire alarm was reported.

July 28

  • There were 11 EMS incidents.

July 29

  • Firefighters responded and stood by the scene at the request of Richfield Fire Department for mutual aid at a structure fire.
  • 10 EMS incidents.
  • Sparking power lines were investigated in the 5300 block of Oaklawn Avenue. The power company was called to respond to the scene.
  • A woodchip fire was reported on Edinborough Way and York Avenue. Police and firefighters investigated but did not find a fire in the area.
  • Three false fire alarms were investigated.

July 30

  • A vehicle engine fire was extinguished in the 7500 block of France Avenue.
  • 13 EMS responses.
  • Paramedics were called to perform emergency medical service at the scene of a vehicle crash with injuries in the 7000 block of York Avenue.
  • Medic 1 responded to the scene of a motorcycle versus car crash in the 6500 block of Gleason Road and provided EMS.
  • Firefighters investigated a report of branches on a power line causing sparking on Spur Road. No immediate danger was found and the power company was contacted. 
  • There was one false fire alarm.

July 31

  • Eight EMS calls.
  • Firefighters responded to the 6400 block of Indian Hills Road for a report of the smell of natural gas outside. The flame in a gas lantern located in the yard was not burning, so the fire department shut off the gas valve to the lantern. 
  • Two false fire alarms were reported.
