Hornets Headed to State for Fourth Straight Year

The girls hockey team will face Mounds View in a quarterfinal matchup on Thursday, Feb. 23.

The Edina girls hockey team was not ready to call its season over quite yet, as the Hornets shut out Chaska/Chanhassen 4-0 to secure the Section 2AA title Friday, Feb. 17, at the Bloomington Ice Garden.

The Hornets (18-4-6) secured a No. 3 seed for the state tournament and will face Mounds View High School in a quarterfinal matchup at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23, at the Xcel Energy Center.

Megan Armstrong led the team with two goals in the second period, while Riley Anderson and Sarah Nielsen each scored one goal apiece. Armstrong led the Hornets with a total of five goals in the sectional tournament.

Goalie Maddie Dahl made 26 saves in the shutout victory, for a grand total of 57 saves during the tournament.

The Hornets looked strong throughout the sectional tournament, trouncing Bloomington Kennedy 10-0 in the quarterfinals, then cruising past Bloomington Jefferson 6-1 in the semifinals.

The girls have been runner-up in the state tournament for the past two years, most recently losing a heartbreaker of a game to Lake Conference rival Minnetonka.

Minnetonka (22-5-1) is the top seed in the state tournament this year and will face Eagan High School in the quarterfinals. Roseville Area High School, Grand Rapids/Greenway, Lakeville North High School and Roseau High School round out the rest of the state tournament competitors.
