Landscape Light Ignites Bush, Gas Leak Reported at Braemar Arena

The Edina Fire Department's weekly activity report for Nov. 14-20.

The  responded to the following incidents during the week of Nov. 14-20:

Nov. 14

  • Paramedic firefighters responded to six incidents for emergency medical service (EMS).
  • Firefighters investigated a report by a passerby of an odor of natural gas outside of . No odor was found. Monitors were used, but no natural gas levels were detected.

  • Nine EMS incidents.
  • Firefighters responded to the intersection of Vernon Avenue and Tracy Avenue for a report of power lines sparking, but were unable to locate any problems.
  • One false fire alarm was investigated.

Nov. 16

  • Firefighters extinguished a small leaf pile burning along the roadway on Vernon Avenue at Tracy Avenue. A discarded cigarette was believed to be the source.
  • 11 EMS calls.
  • A request came from the Richfield Fire Department for mutual aid with a possible house fire. Edina fire units were cancelled en route.
  • Firefighters investigated a reported hissing sound from a stove in the 7100 block of Cahill Road. Firefighters did not find natural gas leaking and advised the occupant to have building maintenance follow up.
  • One false fire alarm was investigated.

  • Nine EMS responses.
  • A neighbor of a home in the 5000 block of Halifax Avenue saw a bush on fire close to the house and called 911. The resident extinguished the fire prior to the arrival of the fire department. Heat from landscape lights that were flush with the ground probably started leaves and the bush on fire.
  • A driver reported hitting something in the roadway and smelling gas. He pulled into the parking lot of the  and called 911. Firefighters found a puncture in the gas tank of the vehicle, plugged the leak and applied absorbent to the gasoline that had leaked in the parking lot. The driver arranged for a tow of the vehicle.
  • Homeowners smelled natural gas inside a residence in the 6000 block of Abbott Avenue. Prior to the arrival of the fire department, they discovered that the gas stove had been left on while they were away. They turned it off and opened the windows. Firefighters tested the air and found the natural gas had dissipated. 
  • Two false fire alarms were reported.

Nov. 18

  • The Bloomington Fire Department requested mutual aid assistance at a house fire in the 7600 block of West 85th Street.
  • There were 15 EMS incidents.
  • A request for mutual aid to St. Louis Park was cancelled en route.
  • Firefighters arrived at a residence in the 6600 block of Limerick Drive after a report of a home filling with gas. Investigation found an electrical igniter malfunctioning on the gas range. The homeowner was advised not to use the stove and to call a qualified repair person. 

Nov. 19

  • Nine EMS responses.
  • An ambulance and an engine responded to a vehicle crash with injuries on Hwy. 62 at Xerxes Avenue.
  • Minneapolis Police requested assistance with the extrication of a person trapped under a vehicle on the Minneapolis side of the 5300 block of France Avenue. 
  • Smoke was reported in the area of the 6300 block of Peacedale Avenue. A person was found illegally burning yard waste. 

Nov. 20

  • Nine EMS incidents.
