Lightning Strike, Electrical Malfunction Require Fire Response

The Edina Fire Department's weekly activity report for July 4-10.

The  responded to the following incidents during the week of July 4-10:

 July 4

  • Paramedic firefighters assisted with Emergency Medical Service for eight incidents.
  • Two false fire alarms were investigated.

July 5

  • Nine EMS responses.
  • Firefighters responded to a natural gas leak in the 6000 block of Killarney Lane. The gas company was contacted and was en route. Houses in the immediate area were evacuated and were monitored for levels of natural gas. Police and fire crews cordoned off the area. The gas company arrived and also tested the homes. A street crew had been contacted to find the broken service line. The line was found and the service line was pinched off. The gas company will repair the line. 
  • Three false fire alarms were reported.

July 6

  • Five EMS calls.
  • Paramedics and the engine crew responded to a vehicle crash on Hwy. 100 off Hwy. 62 and found no injuries. The fire crew cleaned up fluids from the crash. 
  • A transformer on a power pole was malfunctioning in the 4300 block of Eton Place. There were no immediate hazards and the power company was requested to follow up. 
  • Three false fire alarms were investigated.

 

July 7

  • A fire in an electrical panel as a result of an electrical malfunction was extinguished by a building engineer using a fire extinguisher. The incident happened in the lower level parking area of an office building in the 7200 block of France Avenue. A fire inspector was first on the scene to investigate and assisted the building representative in contacting the power company. Power was not affected in the office building and there was no damage beyond the panel. 
  • Eight EMS responses.
  • A CO/Gas monitor alarmed at a home in the 5300 block of Windsor Avenue. Disinfectant spray used near the alarm was found to be the reason for the false alarm. 

 

July 8

  • Eight EMS incidents.
  • A natural gas line was severed by a construction crew in the 5400 block of Woodcrest Drive. The area was marked, but the gas line was looped outside of the markings and was accidentally struck. The construction crew had the gas line pinched and taped prior to the fire crew arriving on the scene. The gas company was contacted to repair the line.

 

July 9

  • 10 EMS responses.
  • A request from Richfield Fire Department for mutual aid was cancelled en route.
  • A carbon monoxide alarm malfunction was investigated in an apartment unit in the 7100 block of York Avenue. The hardwired detector will need to be replaced by property management.
  • One false fire alarm was investigated.

 

July 10

  • Edina fire crews assisted the St. Louis Park Fire Department with a fire in an apartment building at Hwy. 7 and Louisiana Avenue. 
  • A in the 7300 block of Schey Drive. The residents heard a loud boom, smelled an electrical burning smell in the basement and a neighbor was at the door telling them that there was a fire on the side of their house at the gas meter. All occupants escaped the house. Fire crews arrived to find fire at the exterior gas meter spreading up the side of the house and extending into the attic. Crews flowed water into the attic from the exterior to knock the bulk of the fire down, then went inside to finish extinguishing the attic fire. 
  • There were 13 responses for EMS.
  • A carbon monoxide malfunction was investigated in the 5100 block of Juanita Avenue.
  • One false fire alarm investigation.
