Melting Plastic, Recreational Fire Among Latest Edina Calls

The Edina Fire Department's weekly activity report for March 28-April 3.

The responded to the following incidents during the week of March 28-April 3:

March 28

  • Four responses by paramedic firefighters for Emergency Medical Service.
  • Two investigations of false fire alarms.

  • 10 EMS incidents.
  • The smell of smoke was reported in the area of the 3200 block of Southdale Circle. Edina Police arrived and found smoke coming from a recreational fire on the block behind and also in Richfield. Edina fire units were then cancelled en route.

March 30

  • Five EMS incidents.
  • A vehicle crash on Hwy. 62 at Gleason Road received an emergency response by an engine crew and ambulance. There were no injuries found.
  • A reported electrical burning smell was investigated in the 4600 block of Oak Drive. No circuit breakers were tripped and no odor was found. The fire alarm system was found to be in trouble mode and firefighters advised service of system. 
  • One false fire alarm was investigated.

March 31

  • 13 EMS calls.
  • A carbon monoxide alarm malfunction was investigated in the 700 block of Coventry Lane.

April 1

  • A fire alarm brought the fire department to a home in the 7200 block of Trillium Lane. The oven had been turned on without removing the plastic containers stored inside. The plastic melted and smoke set off the smoke detector. There was no fire.
  • A request for mutual aid from the Richfield Fire Department was cancelled before Edina units arrived on the scene.
  • 15 EMS responses.
  • One vehicle crash with injuries occurred on France Avenue at Parklawn Avenue.

April 2

  • Six EMS incidents.
  • One vehicle crash without injuries on France Avenue at West 44th Street was checked and cancelled at the scene.
  • One false fire alarm was reported.

April 3

  • 11 EMS responses.
  • Smoke and smoke odor reported in the basement of a home in the 5600 block of Concord Avenue was investigated. The smoke was traced to a neighbor illegally burning yard waste. Automatic mutual aid responses from St. Louis Park and Richfield Fire Departments were cancelled.
