Sewing Machine Sets Wicker Basket Ablaze, Crews Extinguish Flames
The Edina Fire Department's weekly activity report for Nov. 7-13.

The responded to the following incidents during the week of Nov. 7-13:
Nov. 7
- Edina Fire was requested by the Eden Prairie Fire Department to assist at a structure fire in the 13000 block of Carmel Trail.
- Paramedic firefighters responded to eight calls for emergency medical service.
- One false fire alarm was investigated.

- Six EMS responses.
- A resident requested firefighters test her home for a possible carbon monoxide leak. Monitors were used to test the air, but no elevated levels were found.
- Three false fire alarms.
Nov. 9
- The St. Louis Park Fire Department requested Edina Fire respond to the scene of a possible structure fire in the 2700 block of Louisiana Avenue South. The fire was contained and Edina’s fire crew was cleared.
- 10 EMS incidents.
- A vehicle crash with injuries occurred on Hwy. 62 at France Avenue.
- Firefighters investigated a carbon monoxide alarm in the 4800 block of Larkspur Lane. Slightly elevated readings were found in the area where the CO alarm went off. The CO detector did not have a digital readout, so there was no way of knowing what the highest reading might have been. No CO was detected in other parts of the house. Many candles had been burning in the area and were extinguished. Windows had been opened and levels of CO continued to decrease.
- Richfield Fire requested mutual aid assistance but cancelled Edina Fire en route.
- Firefighters investigated a report of smoke coming from a manhole in the 6300 block of Hillside Road. Smoke or steam was coming from a manhole in the grass near the street. Flags and markings were present and the cover was ajar. “NSP” was also stamped on the cover, so the power company was called. A thermal imaging camera was used and did find heat at the cover. Xcel Energy arrived on the scene and investigated further. Smoke had stopped prior to Xcel Energy arrival.
- Cooking smoke caused a false fire alarm and a fire department response.

- One false fire alarm was reported.
Nov. 11
- Firefighters were called to investigate smoke in the basement of a home in the 6300 block of Mildred Avenue. A wicker basket filled with fabric was found smoldering. It was carried outside and extinguished. The basket had been sitting on the foot control of a sewing machine that was plugged into an outlet.
- Fire crews were dispatched to a dumpster fire near a house in the 6100 block of Westridge Boulevard. Firefighters found a large dumpster fully involved in fire. The dumpster was filled with construction demolition materials, and was approximately 10 feet from the house. The fire could not be extinguished due to the depth and layers of debris and the dumpster also contained many large holes, preventing it from being filled with water. A tow company was called to move the dumpster away from the house and the debris was dumped on the driveway and extinguished.

Nov. 12
- Seven EMS incidents.
- One false fire alarm was investigated.
Nov. 13
- Six EMS responses.
- Firefighters investigated a carbon monoxide alarm sounding in the 4200 block of Valley View Road. Elevated levels of CO were measured on the main level of the home, with low levels in the basement. The gas company was called to investigate. The gas company found the gas stove to be the source of the carbon monoxide.
- A report of burning leaves was cancelled en route.
