Funnel Cloud Prompts Tornado Warning for Edina

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning after a funnel cloud was seen near Hwy 169 and Valley View Road.

UPDATE: A tornado warning for much of Hennepin County officially expired at 8:45 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service's Chanhassen office reports the storm which prompted the warning "was weakened and no longer appears tornadic" as of 8:43 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10.

A funnel cloud was reportedly spotted near the intersection of Hwy 169 and Valley View Road at around 8:20 p.m., prompting the agency to issue the warning for Edina, Richfield, St. Louis Park, Lake Minnetonka, Hopkins, Golden Valley and Southwest Minneapolis.

The area remained under a tornado watch until midnight Tuesday, with the National Weather Service urging residents to take shelter immediately and prepare for an onslaught of large hail as a severe storm makes its way through the area.

"Seek shelter now inside a sturdy structure and stay away from the windows," the agency advised in a storm warning, which was issued at 7:23 p.m.

The storm warning also lasted until 8:45 p.m. The storm could potentially produce quarter-sized hail and high winds. It is currently over New Prague, moving about 25 miles an hour to the northeast.

The agency also issued a tornado watch for Dakota, Scott, Hennepin, Ramsey, Carver, Washington, Anoka and Rice counties, set to expire at midnight.
