Untightened Grill Valve Causes Gas Leak Scare

The Edina Fire Department's weekly activity report for Oct. 31-Nov. 6.

The  responded to the following incidents during the week of Oct. 31-Nov. 6:

Oct. 31

  • Firefighters extinguished a vehicle engine fire on Hwy. 169 under the Lincoln Avenue bridge. 
  • Paramedic firefighters responded to 13 calls requesting Emergency Medical Service.
  • A motor vehicle crash with injuries in the 6200 block of France Avenue required EMS from paramedic firefighters.
  • A possible car fire on Hwy. 62 near France Avenue was cancelled en route.
  • A smoke scare was investigated in the area of West 64th Street and West Shore Drive. A recreational fire was the source of the smoke.

  • Nine EMS incidents.
  • A vehicle crash with injuries occurred on Parklawn Avenue at York Avenue.
  • A vehicle crash on Hwy. 62 at Gleason Road did not have injuries.
  • There were multiple calls for odors of natural gas in the area around the on West 64th Street and also the and medical center on France Avenue. and the area near the also reported the odor. Firefighters and police officers investigated. Fire crews used gas monitors to check all the affected areas and inside buildings, without finding any dangerous levels of gas. The gas company arrived to perform further tests and investigation. 
  • Firefighters responded to investigate a reported oven fire that was out in the 5400 block of Vernon Avenue. The small amount of smoke from burnt food was vented out of the apartment unit.
  • The St. Louis Park Fire department requested mutual aid assistance but then cancelled Edina Fire units en route.
  • Two false fire alarms were reported.     

Nov. 2

  • 15 EMS responses.
  • A vehicle crash on West 65th Street at France Avenue did not have injuries.
  • The odor of natural gas in the back yard of a home in the 7300 block of Lanham Lane and was reported by a neighbor. Firefighters found the valve from the gas grill was turned on just enough to cause gas to leak from the unit. The valve was tightened.
  • One false fire alarm was reported.

  • Nine EMS calls.
  • Paramedics were called to a vehicle crash on Halifax Avenue at France Avenue, but there were no injuries.
  • Firefighters investigated a report of a dumpster fire in the 7200 block of France Avenue. A person was found trying to burn personal papers near the dumpster. The fire was extinguished and the person was instructed to shred personal papers. 
  • One false fire alarm was investigated.

Nov. 4

  • Nine EMS incidents.
  • Firefighters responded to the 6300 block of Barrie Road to investigate a sparking oven. The power to the malfunctioning unit was turned off.
  • One false fire alarm was reported.

Nov. 5

  • Eight EMS responses.
  • A vehicle accident on Hwy. 62 near Tracy Avenue did not have injuries. 

Nov. 6

  • The Eden Prairie Fire Department requested that Edina respond with the aerial ladder truck to the scene of a structure fire in the 13900 block of Caramel Trail. Edina crews responded and provided mutual aid.
  • Five EMS calls.
  • A small fire was reported under the bridge, near the railroad tracks on Benton Avenue. Firefighters extinguished the embers left from a small fire that had been left unattended. 
  • Firefighters investigated a possible natural gas leak in the 4500 block of Browndale Avenue.
  • Two false fire alarms were reported.
