Vehicle Rollover, Gas Leaks Among Edina Fire Calls

The Edina Fire Department's weekly activity report for April 25-May 1.

The  responded to the following incidents during the week of April 25-May 1:

April 25

  • 12 Emergency Medical Service responses by paramedic firefighters.
  • Firefighters were called to the intersection of Garrison Lane and Wooddale Avenue after gas tank brackets broke on a vehicle and the gas tank was dragged for two blocks. No pooling of gasoline was found and floor dry was applied to the larger areas.
  • A natural gas line was hit on West 70th Street near France Avenue. The gas company was on the scene, pinched off the leak and began repairs. Edina Fire units were not needed and cancelled en route.
  • A large amount of smoke was reported coming from a chimney in the 5600 block of Gate Park Road. The smoke was found to be from a wood burning stove, there were no hazards.
  • Four false fire alarms were investigated.

April 26

  • Smoke and a fire alarm were reported at an apartment building in the 5200 block of Vernon Avenue. A cutting board made of plastic composite material was placed on a stove top. The stove had been turned on and ignited the cutting board. Fire did not spread beyond the cutting board.
  • Nine EMS incidents.
  • Paramedics responded to a vehicle crash with injuries on Hazelton Road at France Avenue.
  • A carbon monoxide alarm in the 6000 block of Walnut Drive was checked and found to be low back-up batteries.
  • A carbon monoxide alarm malfunction was investigated in the 5500 block of Oak Glen Road.

April 27

  • 13 EMS responses.
  • Fire units and ambulances responded to a vehicle rollover and crash into a house in the 6800 block of West Shore Drive. An additional ambulance was needed, generating an additional EMS incident.
  • A natural gas line was struck in the 4400 block of West 70th Street. Firefighters monitored the air until the gas company repaired the line.
  • A antifreeze leak from an emergency power generator was reported in the 7700 block of France Avenue. Firefighters found that 10-15 gallons of antifreeze had spilled. The leak was controlled and stopped and drains were plugged. No release to drains or water sheds was noted. A cleanup company was en route to mitigate the spill. 
  • Firefighters were called to the 8000 block of West 78th Street for a report of someone stuck in an elevator. The elevator was working and unoccupied when firefighters arrived, no problem was found.
  • A resident in the 5100 block of Blossom Court reported seeing smoke from a ceiling light fixture. Firefighters investigated and found no smoke or detected any heat signatures. 

April 28

  • 11 EMS incidents.
  • One false fire alarm was investigated.

April 29

  • Edina Fire crews responded to a request for mutual aid assistance from St Louis Park Fire Department at a house fire in the 3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue South. 
  • There were eight EMS responses.
  • One false fire alarm was checked.

April 30

  • 12 EMS incidents.
  • Paramedics responded to assist at a vehicle accident with injuries in Minneapolis on 61st Street and Nicollet Avenue South at the request of Hennepin County Ambulance.
  • Firefighters answered questions at the site of a recreational fire complaint.

May 1

  • 10 EMS incidents.
  • Firefighters assisted the elevator company to remove a person trapped in an elevator in the 6500 block of France Avenue.
  • A fire alarm pull station was reset after a child pulled the alarm at a hotel in the 3400 block of Edinborough Way.
