(VIDEO) Edina Police Carry Torch for Special Olympics

The department took part in the 2011 Law Enforcement Torch Run on Thursday, June 23.

Members of the  traveled nearly 5.2 miles across the city on Thursday, June 23, with a ceremonial torch in tow.

Edina Chief of Police Jeff Long said it was the seventh year the department has taken part in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run. It is one of several charity events the department is involved in to support Special Olympics Minnesota

"Law enforcement has a big presence in Special Olympics in Minnesota and it's just something that we thought would be a good way to give back to the community," Long said.

Edina Police officers, Hennepin County deputies and a few supporters averaged 10-minute miles as they ran, bicycled and rollerbladed from  all the way over to the , where they handed the torch off to their Richfield counterparts.

The Special Olympics Minnesota Summer Games run from June 23-25 throughout the metro area.
