Warm Weather Forecast Delays Opening Of Edina's Outdoor Ice Rinks

EDINA, MN — Edina officials have postponed the opening of a dozen outdoor ice rinks in the city with warm weather in the forecast for this week.

The city had planned to open 12 of its outdoor rinks Monday. No new opening date has been set, but officials said the rinks will open as soon as maintenance workers can get the ice ready for skaters.

Temperatures could climb above 50 degrees Wednesday, though AccuWeather is also forecasting up to an inch of snow could fall Wednesday night with temperatures due to plunge into the teens.

In addition to keeping ice rinks closed, the warm weather could also melt away much of the snow that fell in Edina over the weekend. The city was blanketed with about 10 inches of snow Friday into Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

The 12 ice rinks that were due to open Monday are: Arden Park, Cornelia School Park, Countryside Park, Creek Valley Park, Highlands Park, Lewis Park, Normandale Park, Pamela Park, Strachauer Park, Todd Park, Walnut Ridge Park and Weber Park.

A pop-up rink at Wooddale Park, 4500 W. 50th St., is also set to open during daylight hours when the ice is safe.

Skating is free at outdoor rinks in Edina, while residents can also skate at Braemar Arena, 7501 Ikola Way, for a fee.

Centennial Lakes Park, 7499 France Ave., is expected to open in late December as its deep ponds require more time to freeze, officials said. Click here for updates on Centennial Lakes Park's opening.
