Lakeville Debate is Headed to State Tournament

Editor's note: The following is a press release from the Lakeville Area Public School District.

The State Debate Tournament, which is the Minnesota State High School League's longest running event, marks its 112th anniversary this year.  

The tournament will be held at Willey and Blegen Halls on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis Jan. 18 and 19—this Friday and Saturday. 

This year's Lincoln-Douglas Debate topic is "Resolved: Rehabilitation ought to be valued retribution in the United States criminal justice system."

Qualifiers from Lakeville are Sam Anderson, Josh You, and Dylan Adelman.

Twenty-four students from 16 schools are qualified for the Lincoln-Douglas debate.

Anderson is the Section champion and this is his third time qualifying for State. As a ninth grader, Sam won the Novice state tournament, so it will be fun to see if he can end his debate career the way he began it. Adelman will be making his second trip to state in debate.

This year's Public Forum Debate's topic is "Resolved: On balance, the Supreme Court decision in Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission harms the election process."  

In this Public Forum debate, a new MSHSL event this year where debaters compete as a two-person team—Margaret Gadek and Logan Roberts qualified for state as Section runner-ups.
