Lightning Strikes, Downed Power Lines, Building Fires: Maple Grove Fire Blotter

Severe weather with high winds blew HVAC unit off roof of Jimmy John's and natural gas was escaping through broken pipe on June 21, according the Maple Grove Fire Department.

The following information was provided by the Maple Grove Fire Department for incidents responded to the June 13-22, 2013.

June 13

  • 6500 block of East Fish Lake Road. Unauthorized burning - no permit.

  • 89th Ave North and Forestview Lane. Accident, potential accident. Incident involving city vehicle eastbound of 89th West of Forestview.
  • 12000 block of Robin Road. Special outside fire, Other. Reporting party arrived at the park and noticed smoke coming from the slide, noticed a small fire underneath slide. No one in the area. Arrived and poured water on the slide to cool. Minor damage to the slide.

June 15

  • Northbound Highway 169 and eastbound I-694. Odor, smell of gas. Report of strong odor of natural gas in the area. Could not find anything. Southbound 169 was closed and under heavy construction, which could have created issue.
  • 12200 block of Elm Creek Boulevard. Water problem. Arrived and found building locked. Used key from FD lock box to access. Found walk-in freezer on north side of building with water flowing out the door. Shut off main riser and drained system. Called alarm company and advised same. Talked to construction company, had sprinkler tech and refrigeration tech in route.  Advised mall security of condition of the building.

  • 6200 block of Eagle Lake Drive. Power line down.

June 17

  • 15100 block of 92nd Place North. Strange odor/smell

June 18

  • 9200 block of Garland Lane North. Building fire. Dispatched to fire on exterior balcony of apartment building. Resident was on deck smoking earlier, cigarette butts were in a small red container that was not found.  A fire had burned through the wood deck in the approximate location of the red cigarette butt container. Occupants put water on fire and extinguished most of it before fire department arrived on scene.

June 19

  • 18900 block of 95th Avenue North. Smoke or odor removal
  • 11600 block of 65th Place North. Building fire. Initially dispatched to fire alarm by central monitoring company. Resident later called to report fire in kitchen.  Fire was out when fire department arrived. Material was left on stovetop which caught fire and spread to kitchen.
  • 8600 block of Zinnia Way North. Search for person on land.
  • 9500 block of Ranchview Lane North. EMS call, excluding vehicle accident with injury.
  • 13500 block of 94th Avenue North. Unauthorized burning.
  • 6700 block of East Fish Lake Road. EMS call, excluding vehicle accident with injury.

June 21

  • 13300 block of Bass Lake Road. Gas leak. Dispatched to report of gas odor.  Severe weather with high winds blew HVAC unit off roof of Jimmy John's and natural gas was escaping through broken pipe. Shut off gas at meter.
  • 7400 block of Kilmer Lane North. Building fire. Dispatched to fire alarm.  There was a small fire under a piece of bindery equipment. Employees used fire extinguisher to put out fire. Powder from fire extinguisher caused activation of fire alarm system. Opened overhead doors on both ends of building to ventilate. 
  • County Road 101 and County Road 10. Assist police or other governmental agency.
  • 7500 block of Mariner Drive North. Lightning strike (no fire). Dispatched as a house fire. Was a blown transformer caused by lightning strike.
  • 9700 block of Kirkwood Lane North. Steam, vapor, fog or dust thought to be smoke.
  • 17800 block of 82nd Avenue North. Strange odor/smell. Report of smoke in the area. Investigated, nothing found.
  • 6500 block of Bluebird Drive North. Power line down. Tree from neighbors home fell on to cable tearing it from side of house with some siding. While there, several neighbors came to report other trees down cutting power lines to their homes. Forwarded address information to dispatch to send on to the power company.

June 22

  • 7000 block of Birchview Road North. Assist police or other governmental agency.
  • 7200 block of East Fish Lake Road. Power line down. Dispatched to check fallen tree resting on power line. Referred to Wright Hennepin Electric.
  • Elm Creek Boulevard and Weaver Lake. Gasoline spill. Car just filled up with gas and lost gas tank on roadway.
  • 300 block of West Eagle Lake Drive. Building fire. Dispatched for fire in residential air conditioner. Homeowner shut off power before fire department arrived, checked unit with TIC and pulled external disconnect.

There were also 22 incidents of false or malfunctioning alarms.
