On Friday, Nov. 24, at about 4:50 p.m., officers with the South St. Paul Police Department responded to a residential neighborhood in South St. Paul on a weapons call.
Police were later told that someone was shot and bleeding.
At the scene, officers found Avontae King lying in the street with a gunshot wound to the chest. King was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police interviewed multiple witnesses, and later that day, Iglesias told law enforcement the following, according to the criminal complaint:
- Iglesias and Fisher are friends
- Fisher had been staying on Iglesias’ couch for the last week.
- Fisher asked Iglesias for a ride, and the two went to a residence in Iglesias’ vehicle. Both went into the residence and while inside the residence, Fisher took a bag of marijuana that was on the table and ran out of the residence
- Iglesias followed Fisher out of the residence and King chased after them
- Standing on the sidewalk, Fisher shot the King and he and Iglesias fled in the vehicle they came in
- Iglesias drove Fisher to Cambridge and dropped him off
According to police, Iglesias later changed his version of facts and said a woman drove Fisher to Cambridge while Iglesias rode along. Iglesias said after that, he came to police to admit his involvement, according to the criminal complaint.
