Dakota County Libraries Now Offering 'Express Services'

Dakota County's libraries have new hours. They're also offering book drops and curbside pick-up.

DAKOTA COUNTY, MN — Dakota County's libraries reopened earlier this month with limited building capacity and certain "express services" designed to keep operations efficient and protect library staff and visitors.

In a news release Thursday, the county announced its libraries will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Libraries will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

During these hours, library visitors will be able to visit branches to pick up books on hold, browse items on shelves, check out books and other items, use computers and use printers, scanners, copy machines and fax machines.

The library is also offering virtual and minimum-contact services for patrons who do not want to enter a physical library branch.

The libraries will offer drop boxes to return books at all locations as well as curbside pick up by appointment. Those unable to use the curbside pick up can also inquire about the county's books by mail service.

The library also offers a variety of resources and tools online including e-books, electronic magazines and audiobooks.

Library patrons can also register online for library cards and join a variety virtual programs remotely.

Although libraries have reopened their physical locations, the release stated overdue fines will not be charged at this time. All items checked out from the library are due three weeks from the time of checkout, but the county said materials will automatically renew up to two times if they have not been requested by another patron.

The libraries have reopened with a new set of guidelines to help visitors and staff members remain safe and healthy. Under the new guidelines, face masks are required for all visitors older than 1-year-old.

Visitors are asked to regularly sanitize or wash hands, stay home if feeling sick and keep library visits brief.

The release stated some spaces have been adapted to comply with public health guidelines, but some seating is available for visitors.

Spaces like meeting areas, study rooms, iLab equipment, 2GO! Kits and all childrens' play areas are closed.
