Mendota Heights: A Hub For History Buffs And Nature Enthusiasts
Every town has its traditions. Check out these fun facts about what makes Mendota Heights so special.

Mendota Heights is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Mendota Heights has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.
A few things to know:
- If you're looking for a fun outdoor activity, head to Dodge Nature Center. This beautiful nature preserve spans over 400 acres and offers a wide range of activities, including hiking, birdwatching and even farm tours. You can also sign up for one of their many educational programs and learn more about the natural world.
- Mendota Heights is also home to the historic Oheyawahi/Pilot Knob, a site of great cultural and spiritual significance to the local Dakota people. The protected open space site offers stunning views of the surrounding area and is a great place to learn about the history and culture of the Dakota people.
- Mendota Heights is home to the historic Church of St. Peter, which was founded in 1840 and is the oldest surviving churches in the state of Minnesota. The church is a beautiful example of Gothic Revival architecture and features stunning stained glass windows.
- Mendota Heights boasts a population of more than 11,700 people according to the 2020 census. The town is the first ring southern suburb of the Twin Cities.
- Mendota Heights is also home to several great parks, including Friendly Marsh Park, which offers a peaceful retreat in the heart of the city. The park features walking trails, a boardwalk and a variety of wildlife, including beavers, muskrats and a wide range of birds.
- If you're a history buff, be sure to check out the Sibley Historic Site, located just a short drive from Mendota Heights in neighboring Mendota. The site features several historic buildings, including the home of Henry Hastings Sibley, the first governor of Minnesota.
- Mendota Heights is home to the historic Mendota Bridge, which was built in 1926 and spans the Minnesota River between Mendota Heights and Fort Snelling. The bridge is a beautiful example of Art Deco architecture and offers stunning views of the river and surrounding area.
- The Mendota Heights area is also home to several excellent restaurants, including the popular Lucky's 13 Pub Mendota. This local favorite offers a wide range of delicious pub fare and features a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
- If you're looking for a unique shopping experience, head to the nearby city of St. Paul and check out the iconic Midway Used & Rare Bookstore. This massive bookstore features a mix of over 100,000 reading materials of all kinds and three floors to browse.
- Situated in Mendota Heights, there exists a lake known as Augusta Lake. The lake was bestowed its name in honor of one of Henry Hastings Sibley's daughters.
- A scenic paved trail, the Big Rivers Regional Trail, runs along the northern edge of Dakota County from Eagan to Lilydale and offers views of the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers. This trail links to several other trails and historic landmarks, and its trailhead grants access to a flat paved trail built on an old railroad bed.
- If you're interested in the natural world, be sure to visit the nearby Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge. This beautiful refuge spans over 14,000 acres and offers a wide range of recreational activities, including hiking, birdwatching and wildlife viewing. It's a great way to get in touch with nature and enjoy the great outdoors.
