14-Year-Old Fatally Shoots 13-Year-Old By Accident: Minneapolis Police

The 14-year-old was booked into the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center, police said.

MINNEAPOLIS — A 13-year-old boy was shot dead by a 14-year-old boy in an accidental shooting early Tuesday, Minneapolis Police said. The 14-year-old was booked into the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center.

"The death of a child is always incredibly troubling and tragic," said Brian Chief O’Hara in a statement. "Our investigators will work diligently to answer the many questions we have. In addition to supporting the families that are impacted by this tragedy, everyone must make every effort to ensure that every gun is securely stored."

At about 1:30 a.m., police responded to a residence on the 2400 block of Ferrant Place. They found a 13-year-old boy inside who was shot once.

Despite lifesaving efforts by officers, the boy died at the scene, police said.

Investigators believe the 14-year-old boy was handling a gun when the 13-year-old boy was shot. No one else was injured.

There were two women and other children in the home at the time of the shooting, according to authorities.

"MPD is familiar with both of the boys," police said. Investigators are working to determine the sequence of events that led up to the shooting.
