Boy, 3, Shot Dead In NE Minneapolis Apartment Building

MINNEAPOLIS — A 3-year-old boy was shot dead in a northeast Minneapolis apartment building Monday afternoon. No arrests have been made.

"My thoughts are with the family of this little boy; they have experienced an unimaginable tragedy," Chief Brian O’Hara said in a statement.

"The death of a young child has such a profound impact on both the child's immediate family and the first responders who tried so hard to save a life. As we conduct our investigation, I ask for compassion for all those whose lives have been forever altered today."

At about 12:45 p.m. on Monday, officers responded to the "Hook and Ladder" apartment complex on the 2300 block of Jefferson Street Northeast.

Officers found a 3-year-old boy inside with a gunshot wound. Police provided immediate medical aid with the help of firefighters and EMS personnel.

The boy was transported to Hennepin Healthcare Hospital, where he died.

"Investigators are working diligently to determine what happened," police said in a news release.

Officers secured the scene and canvassed the area, and Minneapolis Forensic Scientists responded to process the scene.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner will release the name of the deceased along with the cause and manner of death.
