📰 News we're reading

1. Struggling north Minneapolis grocer North Market to close with relaunch planned for 2026 (startribune.com) — North Minneapolis residents will lose one of their few full-service grocery options when nonprofit-run North Market closes in February, with a revamped store planned to reopen in late 2026. As the city confronts food insecurity, Minneapolis officials have added $200,000 in the 2026 budget to explore a potentially city-owned grocery store in a vulnerable neighborhood.

2. Bus service to replace Northstar Rail Line in January (kstp.com) — If you commute between Minneapolis and the northwest metro, prepare for Northstar rail service to end January 4 and be replaced by a much more frequent bus line starting January 5. The train from downtown Minneapolis to Big Lake is being shut down due to steep taxpayer subsidies and low post-pandemic ridership, while officials work on long-term plans for the existing rail infrastructure.

3. Owner of Wuollet, other Twin Cities bakeries dies (startribune.com) — Minneapolis bakery fans are feeling the loss of Eric Shogren, whose death comes after the closure of Wuollet’s Minneapolis locations and other Twin Cities shops. A Baker’s Wife’s in south Minneapolis and Hans’ Bakery in Anoka remain open, but the future of those businesses and the Wuollet brand is uncertain as financial troubles and past closures loom large.

4. Tensions rise: West St. Paul man disputes ICE gun claims (kstp.com) — Escalating confrontations between immigration activists and federal agents have now reached Minneapolis, where a viral Target incident and a warning from Mayor Jacob Frey highlight fears that someone could be seriously hurt. The story centers on a West St. Paul activist disputing claims he pointed a gun at ICE agents, underscoring growing regional tension around immigration enforcement.
