Weed Rules In Minneapolis Parks Just Got An Update
Minneapolis just made a change to its weed rules, and it could affect your next visit to the park.
MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Starting May 15, smoking or vaping cannabis in Minneapolis parks will be officially prohibited under a new Tobacco and Cannabis Policy approved by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB).
The updated policy, passed by commissioners on May 7, adds cannabis to the existing rules that already ban tobacco use on park property.
While the policy won’t be enforced by citations, officials say the goal is to encourage compliance through community reminders and posted signage, much like the existing tobacco rules.

"Anyone can ask someone not to smoke or vape cannabis in the park," MPRB said in a statement.
What’s Banned:
- Smoking or vaping cannabis in all public parks and MPRB facilities
- Tobacco use in any form
- Vaping THC or any synthetically similar products
New signs reflecting the changes will be installed throughout the city’s parks this summer.

THC Edibles Can Be Sold At Permitted Events
Alongside the updated smoking rules, the board also passed a new THC Policy that regulates the sale of edibles and beverages containing THC at permitted events and by concessionaires.
Under the new rules:
- Only products with 5 mg or less of THC per serving will be allowed
- No smoking or vaping of THC is permitted at events
- THC edibles must comply with state potency limits and labeling rules
Local Control Over Cannabis Use
Although Minnesota’s 2023 cannabis legalization law allows public consumption in general, local jurisdictions like the MPRB are allowed to impose their own restrictions.
The new rules reflect that authority, limiting how cannabis and THC products can be consumed or sold on park property.
