Cosplays and Concerts: Your AniMinneapolis Weekend Survival Guide

From costume hacks to dance floor beats, this AniMinneapolis guide helps you crush the con without breaking a sweat.

It’s finally here — AniMinneapolis 2025 has officially kicked off TODAY (May 9–11), and if you're reading this while speed-packing your last-minute con bag or frantically Googling “is it too late to go to AniMinneapolis?”, take a deep breath. The short answer? Nope. You're not too late. You're actually perfectly on time to dive into one of the most vibrant anime conventions in the Midwest, held at the fabulous Hyatt Regency Minneapolis.

Whether you’re a wide-eyed first-timer, a seasoned cosplayer running on caffeine and vibes, or a curious local deciding to check it out on a whim, this guide will help you survive (and thrive) through all the cosplay, concerts, and chaos this weekend has to offer — with plenty of fun, practicality, and ConSweet-fueled energy.

Got No Badge Yet? No Worries!

Let’s clear this up first. If you haven’t pre-registered, you can still get your badge at the door. That’s right — AniMinneapolis isn’t locking anyone out. Weekend and day passes are available on-site, and the lines move quicker than you’d think (especially if you show up early). Don’t forget to bring:

  • A valid ID
  • Proof of vaccination or mask if required (policies may shift, so check at the door)
  • Cash or card — they accept both!

Once you have that shiny badge in your hand, congrats: you’re officially in.

Pack Like a Pro: The Essential Con Bag

You don’t need to haul a suitcase around the con floor, but having a well-packed day bag can seriously save your weekend. Think of it like your survival kit—without the drama. First up: comfy shoes. You’ll be on your feet a lot, so leave the painful fashion statements behind (or stash them in your car for photos later). Trust us, your arches will thank you.

Bring some cash. While most vendors take cards these days, not all do—and you don’t want to miss out on that perfect print or adorable keychain because Wi-Fi went on strike. It’s also handy for tipping hotel staff or grabbing something quick without hunting for an ATM.

Snacks and water are non-negotiable. Sure, the ConSweet has free ramen and soda, but if you want to stay functional past noon, toss a few protein bars or healthy snacks in your bag and bring a water bottle you can refill. Hydration = power.

Deodorant. Just... please. It gets warm, there are crowds, and we’re all trying to have a good time. A quick midday refresh can make a big difference—for you and everyone around you.

You’ll also want a portable phone charger. Between the photos, schedule-checking, and figuring out where your next panel is, your phone will chew through battery faster than you expect. Keep a charger handy so you’re not stuck camping by a wall outlet.

If you're cosplaying, a mini repair kit is a must. Think safety pins, wig glue, thread, maybe a little tape—whatever your costume might need for a quick fix. A busted strap or loose seam shouldn’t ruin your day.

Last but not least, hand sanitizer. It’s a con. You’re going to touch stuff. Other people are going to touch stuff. Just be ready.

Keep it light, keep it practical, and you’ll be ready to enjoy the con without any “oh no” moments.

Must-See, Must-Do Events You Can Still Catch

AniMinneapolis isn't just about wandering the halls in cosplay or impulse-buying keychains (though, let’s be honest, you’ll do plenty of both). What really makes the con shine are the events that bring everyone together—whether you’re a hardcore gamer, an art enthusiast, or someone who just wants to scream-sing anime openings with a crowd of strangers. Here’s what you don’t want to miss:

Tabletop & Video Gaming

Gamers, this is your home base. Whether you’re rolling dice, shuffling decks, or button-mashing your way to glory, there's something happening nonstop.

  • Tabletop Central is always hopping. You’ll find everything from strategy games and one-shot D&D sessions to casual card games. Newbies are welcome, and if you wander in looking curious, odds are someone will invite you to join their game.
  • Video Game Tournaments are going strong all weekend. Expect Smash Bros., Street Fighter, Mario Kart, and even rhythm games like Dance Dance Revolution (which is equal parts performance art and cardio workout).
  • Not in a competitive mood? There’s casual free-play too—perfect for relaxing between panels or showing off your retro game skills.

Exhibit Hall & Artist Alley

Let’s not pretend: this is where your money goes. And honestly? Worth it.

The Exhibit Hall is packed with vendors selling everything from plushies and manga to vintage figures and cosplay gear. Whether you're hunting for something specific or just love the thrill of discovery, it's easy to lose track of time (and your budget).

Right next door, Artist Alley is the creative soul of the con. You'll find fan art that hits you right in the feels, pins and prints that scream your current hyperfixation, and accessories you won’t find at Hot Topic. Talk to the artists—they’re usually super friendly and love chatting about fandoms, techniques, or commissions.

Karaoke & Stage Shows

Want peak con chaos energy? This is it. Open Mic Karaoke is the stuff of legend. It’s raw, it’s unpredictable, and it’s absolutely a blast—especially when someone belts out “Cruel Angel’s Thesis” like they’re headlining a world tour. Come to sing, cheer, or just vibe.

Stage Shows are a surprise grab bag of awesome. From idol groups and improv comedy to theatrical cosplay skits, there’s always something fun or unexpected happening. Check your schedule and swing by—you might just discover your new favorite act.

Special Guests & Autographs

Kanpai!Con 2025 is bringing the star power! Whether you’re into anime heroes, legendary voice actors, Broadway-caliber performers, or sword-wielding samurai, this year’s guest lineup is stacked with icons you won’t want to miss. Not only will these special guests be appearing on panels and at performances, but many will also be available for autographs, photo ops, and maybe even a good old-fashioned nerd-out session. Here's a sneak peek at just some of the incredible talent headed to Omaha this April:

Greg Ayres

A fan-favorite voice actor with a legendary scream and a shock of colorful hair to match, Greg Ayres has lent his voice to more than 376 anime titles. If you’ve watched anime in the last 20 years, chances are you’ve heard (and loved) Greg. Bonus points if you can name all his characters in Pop Team Epic. Bring your merch, bring your questions, and definitely bring your enthusiasm.

Jay Hickman

With a velvety voice and over 100 anime credits to his name, Jay Hickman is a master of versatile performances. You might recognize him as Joichiro Yukihira from Food Wars!, Dr. Stylish from Akame ga Kill!, or the totally extra Dera Mochimazzi from Tamako Market.

Emily Cramer

From Broadway to anime, Emily Cramer is a powerhouse performer whose vocal talents span Pokémon (Sun & Moon, Journeys, Paldean Winds), Yu-Gi-Oh! (Arc-V, VRAINS, Sevens), and video games like Genshin Impact and Warhammer 40K. Her theater chops include starring in Les Misérables, School of Rock, and Shrek the Musical.

Kohei

Hailing from Tokyo and now a fixture in the New York R&B scene, Kohei is a vocal dynamo who’s performed at the Apollo Theater (eight times!), opened for legends like Raekwon and Case, and served as the official MC for Japan Fes. His style blends soulful melodies with international flair—and when he hits the stage at Kanpai!Con, you’ll feel it in your bones.

Robert L. Mungle

The man, the myth, the Reverend. Robert L. Mungle is not only an anime veteran with over 100 credits (Ghost Stories, Excel Saga, Akame ga Kill!, and more), but he’s also a stand-up comic and founder of The Whiskey Brothers. His voice work in titles like Angel Beats, Gantz, and Halo Legends proves his talent isn’t just for laughs—it’s legendary.

Gareth West

Bringing energy and heart to every role, Gareth West is known for playing Takeda-sensei in Haikyu!!, Kanichi in Food Wars!, and Seiya in Tsurune. He’s also part of the upcoming Red Rising: A Power Rangers Fan Film as the Red Ranger himself, Jason Lee Scott.

Samurai Dan & Jillian

These two bring the blade! Samurai Dan and his wife Jillian combine martial arts mastery with hilarious, history-rich performances that have become a staple at conventions nationwide. Specializing in authentic 16th-century samurai techniques, their live shows are equal parts educational and ridiculously fun.

Autograph & Photo Sessions

Many guests will be available for autographs and photo opportunities throughout the weekend. Make sure to check the Kanpai!Con 2025 program guide and app for scheduling details and location info. Some guests may offer prints or merchandise at their table, and most are happy to chat with fans—especially if you're bringing thoughtful questions, throwback merch, or just big fan energy.

Cosplay Prom / Fantasy Ball

Yes, this is your fairy tale moment. The Fantasy Ball is one of AniMinneapolis’s most beloved events — free with your badge and open to all. You can go full Prince/Princess in formalwear, rock your cosplay, or just dress nice-ish and twirl anyway.

Never danced before? Free dance lessons are held beforehand by a pro instructor. And if you’re solo? There’s a Date Auction where you can bid for a dance partner, all for a good cause.

Maid Café

Ever dreamed of being treated like royalty? The Royale Maid Café is here to make that happen. Think charming cosplay waitstaff, light snacks, sweet performances, and a lot of wholesome energy.

Yes, it costs a little extra — but snacks and good vibes are included, and you’ll leave smiling (or blushing).

Escape Room & Arcade

The on-site Escape Room experience is exactly the kind of immersive mini-adventure you didn’t know you needed. It’s interactive, puzzle-packed, and a great way to bond with friends or total strangers.

And the Arcade Room? Retro games, rhythm games, button-mashers — all the classics, all the chaos.

Concerts & Dance Events

Friday and Saturday night explode with energy. DJs like Greg Ayres and YTCracker will light up the room with a cocktail of EDM genres — from techno and trance to hardstyle and drum 'n' bass.

Whether you dance all night or just vibe by the speaker stack, these parties are iconic. Come sweaty, leave glowing.

ConSweet Goodness

Let’s not underestimate the magic of free food. ConSweet is a lifesaver. They’re serving ramen, rice, and soda all weekend to badge holders. It’s not gourmet, but it hits when your energy is fading and your wallet’s already begging for mercy. Supplies are limited each day, so swing by early.

Not Just Anime: The Surprising Depth of Fan-Run Panels

At AniMinneapolis, the fan-run panels are where things really start to get interesting—and unpredictable. Sure, you’ll find your fair share of anime analysis, cosplay workshops, and voice actor Q&As, but these sessions are fueled by the wildly diverse passions of the people who create them. These aren’t corporate-run lectures or overly polished seminars—they’re led by fellow fans who love sharing what excites them, no matter how niche, weird, or surprisingly practical it might be.

You might walk into a panel expecting anime trivia and instead find a discussion on how to go vegan without sacrificing your love of comfort food. There could be a deep-dive into designing minimalist living spaces that still show off your merch collection, keeping clutter at bay, or a session on using container gardening to bring a little green into your apartment life. Some panels explore seriously useful life stuff—like repairing your credit score or launching a small business—which you didn’t expect to learn about at a convention, but hey, here you are.

There’s also space for the brainy and the forward-thinking. A fan might walk you through how AI and virtual reality are changing education, or break down the basics of digital marketing for artists trying to make a name for themselves. Interested in languages? Someone could be sharing techniques for actually sticking with learning a second one (looking at you, abandoned language apps). And if you’ve ever dreamed about hosting your own con or meet-up, there’s probably a panel for that too—because AniMinneapolis is full of creators who want to help others get started.

Then there are the wonderfully offbeat experiences that feel tailor-made for convention-goers. A panel might cover how to find budget accommodations on your next anime pilgrimage to Japan, or invite attendees to meditate in cosplay as a way to reset from the weekend chaos. The beauty of it all is that you never really know what you’re going to get—except that it will be heartfelt, unique, and presented by someone who genuinely cares about the topic.

Getting There, Parking, and the Hotel Vibe

AniMinneapolis is hosted at the Hyatt Regency Minneapolis, nestled right on Nicollet Mall. The hotel has loads of event space, and it’s beautifully set up to handle thousands of con-goers in style.

Public transit? The light rail and bus system are easy to use and close to the venue. If you're environmentally inclined, carpool or take energy-efficient transit — better for the planet and your wallet.

Staying at the Hyatt? Rooms are still going for $135/night (plus tax), and they’re roomy enough to fit a friend group. Some nearby hotels may still have space — call instead of relying on websites.

Skywalk access around downtown is limited and confusing (and it shuts early), so don’t depend on it for late-night escapades. Comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate layers are your best bet.

Survival Tips from a Convention Gremlin (That’s Me)

Let’s get real:

  • Going Solo? You’re never really alone at a con. Strike up conversations in line or during panels — most people are just as excited (and awkward) as you.
  • Budget Wisely. Set a daily cash limit for shopping. Credit cards are great until Sunday panic sets in and your bank texts you “WTF happened??”
  • Stay Fed & Hydrated. Ramen’s great, but add some real food. Keep water on you at all times.
  • Protect Your Merch. Art gets bent, plushies get smooshed. Bring a folder or hard case to keep prints pristine.
  • Know When to Rest. It’s okay to skip an event. Find a quiet spot, people-watch, breathe. You’ll enjoy more when you’re not running on fumes.
  • Consent Matters. Always ask before taking photos — cosplay is not consent. And be respectful in panels, meetups, and anywhere else.
  • Explore Your Accommodations. Know where your room is, where to stash your haul, and what food options are nearby (besides the ConSweet).

You Belong Here!

Whether you're decked out in full cosplay, flying solo in jeans and a hoodie, or dragging in last-minute because you just found out about AniMinneapolis this morning, this convention has a place for you. So grab that badge, rock that outfit, and make the most of every second. AniMinneapolis is live right now — and you’ve still got time to make it your best con yet.
