Cynthia Bauerly, the longest-serving commissioner for the Minnesota Department of Revenue, is departing the administration of Gov. Tim Walz after first being appointed to the post in 2015 by former Gov. Mark Dayton.
Bauerly is the second Dayton holdover to depart in recent months. Myron Frans, the former commissioner of Minnesota and Management Budget, recently left for a job as senior vice president of finance and operations at the University of Minnesota.

“Even when wading through complicated tax laws, Commissioner Bauerly sees the big picture, leads with her values, and prioritizes the needs of Minnesota children, families and small businesses,” Walz said in a statement. “We are sad to see her go, and we are committed to finding someone with this same commitment to servant leadership.”
A Walz spokesman said Bauerly had not yet announced her next move. Bauerly has served as a member of the United States Federal Election Commission and was legislative director for U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer. She is considered a top political talent in DFL circles.
In a statement, Bauerly said: “It has been an honor and privilege to lead the department for the past six years.”
Deputy Commissioner Lee Ho will serve temporarily as commissioner until Walz appoints a replacement.
The agency manages the state’s revenue system and administers state tax laws, collecting more than $25.2 billion annually.
