MINNEAPOLIS, MN — U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar is backing State Sen. Omar Fateh in the 2025 Minneapolis mayoral race, calling him "a champion for working people" and praising his push for a $20 minimum wage and stronger rent stabilization.

"I am thrilled to announce my support for Omar Fateh to be the next mayor of Minneapolis," Omar said in a statement. "Our city deserves new, bold leadership that meets this pivotal moment."

"Omar is the leader our city needs to stand up to Donald Trump as he wages unlawful attacks on our cities," she said.

Fateh thanked Omar for the endorsement, saying he’s proud to stand with her "in the fight for a city that truly works for everyone."

Fateh initially secured his party’s endorsement, but in August, Minnesota Democrats withdrew it after finding “substantial failures” in the July 19 Minneapolis convention, including the mistaken elimination of another candidate from endorsement consideration.

The findings cited problems with an online voting system and security lapses in delegate registration.

Frey currently holds more endorsements from elected officials and labor organizations.

"The mayor is proud to have endorsements from Governor Walz, Senator Klobuchar, the overwhelming majority of labor unions, and law enforcement leaders like Sheriff Witt," said Frey campaign manager Sam Schulenberg.

"The mayor looks forward to working with them to build more affordable housing, hire more police officers, and defend Minneapolis from the Trump administration's attacks on our city."
