📰 News we're reading

1. U.S. Inflation Slows Unexpectedly: Here’s What It Means For MN Grocery Prices (patch.com) — Minneapolis–St. Paul shoppers are seeing slightly lower inflation than the national average, with the metro’s annual rate at 2.5 percent and grocery prices up about 1.9 percent over the year. Local residents are paying sharply more for beef, fish, and poultry, while pork chops and eggs have become relative bargains, reflecting shifting food costs across Twin Cities stores.

2. Minneapolis budget could lead to spendier settlement agreement (kstp.com) — Minneapolis leaders are reworking plans for a $38 million Public Safety Training and Wellness Center after shifting $5.5 million in the new budget to pedestrian and bike safety projects. The change could threaten matching state bonding dollars and, officials warn, may eventually contribute to higher property taxes as the city still must meet public safety reform requirements with inadequate existing facilities.

3. 'Lockdown buttons' installed inside classrooms at U of M (kstp.com) — The University of Minnesota is rolling out new in-classroom “lockdown buttons” on its Twin Cities campus, aiming to quickly secure doors and alert responders during active threats. The effort comes as Minnesotans still process the mass shooting at Annunciation Church and School in Minneapolis, and includes expanded smart turnstiles in residence halls to bolster everyday student safety.

4. Citizenship ceremonies take on new meaning while immigration raids underway (startribune.com) — A north Minneapolis resident finally gained U.S. citizenship after nearly 30 years, easing fears she felt while working on Lake Street in south Minneapolis amid federal immigration enforcement. Her experience, and that of other new citizens in a St. Paul courtroom, highlights how naturalization now feels more urgent and empowering as federal immigration policies tighten.

5. Minnesota requires copper sellers to have a state-issued license, but is it helping to reduce theft? (kstp.com) — Minnesota’s new licensing requirement for copper sellers is starting to curb wire thefts, but St. Paul officials say it hasn’t stopped the problem, with some stolen wire even marked for Minneapolis. With tens of thousands of streetlights at risk and repair costs soaring, cities are tightening hardware and watching recyclers more closely to protect public safety and budgets.
