Major Twin Cities Freeway Closures This Weekend: I-94, I-35E And I-494
Both downtown St. Paul and the south metro will see freeway closures as MnDOT continues bridge and drainage work.

TWIN CITIES, MN — Significant freeway closures are planned for the Twin Cities this weekend, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
I-94 And I-35E In St. Paul
From 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, through 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 8, MnDOT will close:
- Eastbound I-94 between Highway 280 and I-35E.
- Northbound I-35E between Highway 5 and University Avenue.
Detours will be in place. Eastbound I-94 traffic will head north on Highway 280, east on Highway 36, and south on I-35E. Northbound I-35E drivers will use eastbound I-494 to westbound I-94.

Other impacts include:
- Rondo Avenue closed between Rice Street and Marion Street from Sept. 8–12.
- The westbound I-94 Marion Street exit to Rondo Avenue will also close during that time.
- The Cedar Street bridge over I-94 remains closed through late September.
The work is part of MnDOT’s project to repair nine bridges over I-94 and I-35E in St. Paul.

I-494 In Richfield And Bloomington
At the same time, crews will close I-494 in both directions between Highway 100 and Highway 77 in Richfield and Bloomington.
The closure begins at 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5. All ramps in the area will close earlier at 8 p.m. Crews plan to reopen the interstate by 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 8.
Detours will be posted:
- Westbound I-494 drivers can use northbound Highway 77 to westbound Highway 62 to southbound Highway 100 to return to I-494.
- Eastbound I-494 drivers can take northbound Highway 100 to eastbound Highway 62 to southbound Highway 77 to reconnect.
MnDOT said the closure is needed for drainage construction. All work is weather-dependent.
The agency urged motorists to be alert and slow down in work zones.
