Minneapolis Police Recruit Officer Dies Unexpectedly, Chief Says

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara announced Thursday that Recruit Officer Amara Kanneh died unexpectedly while off duty on Wednesday, according to the department.

Kanneh, hired Oct. 6 and working on preservice training at the Minneapolis Police Academy, was described by O’Hara as “a kind, respectful, generous person who was excited to join the MPD ranks.”

“My heart goes out to Recruit Officer Kanneh’s family, and I am grateful they shared their loved one with us,” O’Hara said in a statement, adding that Kanneh “will forever be remembered as a valued member of our MPD family.”

The MPD said its Health and Wellness Unit, along with professional therapists, is providing support to Kanneh’s classmates and department personnel.

The department ended its announcement with: "May Recruit Officer Kanneh rest in peace."
