Minnesota Not Done With Storms Quite Yet: NWS

More damaging gusts and hail are possible later this week.

MINNESOTA — Heavy storms known as derechos came through Minnesota Friday, but we shouldn't necessarily expect a long stretch of nice weather in the aftermath, according to the National Weather Service. Minnesotans should prepare for more stormy conditions Thursday night.

The NWS's Storm Prediction Center says there's a slight chance of severe thunderstorms throughout much of Minnesota Thursday. The threat includes possibly damaging gusts and hail.

Though there's a risk of storms, it's not definite. The National Weather Service's forecast for the Twin Cities on Thursday is mostly sunny with a high near 83 and a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 a.m.

A derecho is essentially a "widespread, long-lived wind storm," which can include hurricane-force winds, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Friday's derechos produced multiple confirmed tornadoes, according to a report by Bring Me the News.
