MN Ranked 8th 'Safest State' In US: Here's Why

MINNEAPOLIS — A new analysis of safety across the United States ranks Minnesota as the eighth safest state in the nation.

Data website WalletHub evaluated crime rates, health and safety infrastructure, vehicle crash data, and more for the study.

Minnesota is the only Midwest state in the top 10, dominated by New England states. Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana were the least safe states.

"In order to determine the most secure states, WalletHub compared the 50 states across 52 key metrics," WalletHub states. "The data set ranges from assaults per capita to the total loss amount from climate disasters per capita to the unemployment rate."

Minnesota showed a particularly strong performance in healthcare access and relatively low violent crime rates. Here's how it was ranked among particular factors:

  • Overall rank for Minnesota: 8th
  • 14th – Murders & Non-Negligent Manslaughters per Capita
  • 16th – Assaults per Capita
  • 5th – Fatal Occupational Injuries per 100,000 Full-Time Workers
  • 3rd – Fatalities per 100 Million Vehicle Miles of Travel
  • 28th – Sex Offenders per Capita
  • 5th – Share of Uninsured Population
