MINNEAPOLIS — The buzz about sipping martinis while shopping for toothpaste at Target was too good to be true. A viral rumor about Minneapolis-based retail giant Target opening cocktail bars started as a joke — but not everyone got the memo.

According to the fact-checking website Snopes, the rumor started in November.

The claim originated from Men's Humor, a network of social media accounts that describes its content as "Humor tailored for men," Snopes found. It took off from there.

"If you need me I'll be wasting away in Targetritaville," wrote one Threads user, sharing an AI-generated image of a Target-branded margarita.

"They are going to make Billions and that's BILLIONS with the big B. Coz housewives are just gonna shop drunk all day," wrote an X user. "That return policy is going to be changed real fast."

While the idea of sipping a Target-tini while shopping the Joanna Gaines "Magnolia" collection may have captured the internet’s imagination, it’s time to put down the margarita glasses and face reality—Target has no plans to open cocktail bars in its stores.
