Nominees must have five years of teaching experience and work at a pre-K-12th grade school, adult education program or family education program. Nominees are interviewed by a panel of education, business and government leaders, who then select the Teacher of the Year.

Four Minnesota teachers have gone on to win National Teacher of the Year.

The 2020 Teacher of the Year is Qorsho Hassan, a fourth-grade teacher in the Rosemount–Apple Valley–Eagan school district and the first Somali-American educator to receive the award.
