'Operation Metro Surge' In Minneapolis Kicks Off With 12 Arrests

ST. PAUL, MN — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said they have arrested a dozen people with prior criminal convictions as part of a new enforcement initiative in Minneapolis.

The arrests were made during "Operation Metro Surge," which ICE launched on Dec. 1.

ICE called those arrested the "worst of the worst," citing prior convictions for sexual assault, domestic violence, robbery, and DUI.

Homeland Security officials attributed the operation to what they described as gaps in local cooperation with immigration enforcement.

"Sanctuary policies and politicians like Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey allowed these pedophiles, domestic terrorists, and gang members to roam the streets and terrorize Americans," said Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.

"ICE law enforcement are risking their lives to protect Minnesotans while their own elected officials sit by and do nothing. No matter when and where, ICE will find, arrest, and deport ALL criminal illegal aliens."

Minneapolis and St. Paul have long had separation ordinances that restrict local police involvement in civil immigration enforcement. City leaders have said the policies allow federal agencies to do their work while helping build trust between immigrant communities and local police.
