📰 News we're reading

1. Minneapolis grain silo for sale near the U a ‘long shot' for redevelopment (startribune.com) — Hennepin County is trying to sell a long-abandoned grain elevator near the University of Minnesota, a challenging Minneapolis industrial site now in tax forfeiture. The 1.4-acre parcel by Huntington Bank Stadium is costly to demolish or rehab, yet sits amid redeveloped neighborhoods, raising big questions about its future use and impact on the area.

2. 2 hurt after fires burns through 'over packed' Minneapolis home (fox9.com) — Two people were critically injured when firefighters pulled them from a house fire in an “over packed” home in south Minneapolis’ Ericsson neighborhood during Sunday’s winter storm. Crews battled flames that spread from the first floor into the basement and attic, calling a second alarm and using a Metro Transit bus as a warming shelter while the blaze left the home uninhabitable.

3. Minneapolis shooting leaves teen dead (fox9.com) — A 17-year-old boy was killed Sunday evening when someone fired into a home on Ilion Avenue North in Minneapolis’ Jordan neighborhood, striking him while he was inside. Police say officers provided aid before he died at the hospital, and investigators are still working to determine a motive as Chief O’Hara pledges to devote every available resource to the case.

4. St. Paul poised to end 2025 with half the homicides of 2024 (twincities.com) — St. Paul is on track to finish 2025 with just 15 homicides, about half of last year’s total, while Minneapolis homicides have also fallen 17% compared with 2024. Police credit focused work on nonfatal shootings, domestic violence, and illegal guns for sharply reduced shootings and other major crimes, even as they stress that any loss of life remains unacceptable.
