Thanksgiving Day shopping never fully returned due to shifts in consumer behavior and demands from retail employees and the public to make Thanksgiving a day off for all.

One retailer, the outdoor outfitter REI, is closed both Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday. REI, which has stores in 44 states, including Minnesota, has treated Black Friday as a paid holiday since 2015 as part of its #OptOutside tradition.
