Divorcee Finds a Sense of Community at Album Benbrook

55+ apartment community offers residents a renewed sense of purpose with the luxury of time to explore a lifestyle that fulfills them.

(Benbrook, TX) – It has been just over two years since divorcee Debbie Passmore, 66, made a decision that has been life changing for her. She was one of the first residents to move into Album Benbrook, a 55 plus active adult community in Benbrook, Texas, when the community opened in September 2022.

“I moved here from Lubbock, Texas, because I wanted to be closer to my kids, and my mom, and my sister and her family,” she said.

Passmore is in good company. According to a 2024 report by the National Association of Realtors (NAR), 30 percent of people who moved in 2024 cited being closer to family and friends as the main reason for their move.

For Passmore, the motivation was also to improve her psyche. “I lived in a much bigger place, but I was all alone,” she said. “I have made really good friends here,” she said.

Since moving into Album Benbrook, Passmore has gotten very involved in community activities. She started up a walking club that meets regularly, and has joined her neighbors on several 5k walks, including the “Spring Has Sprung” walk that they did in nearby Pecan Valley in Spring 2024.

“We did a lot of training for the event by walking the hallways of Album Benbrook since the hallways are about as wide as the trails,” said Passmore.

The group has also done a 10k walk, and in Spring 2025, Passmore plans to travel to Louisville, Kentucky, to do a walk with her sister around the time of the Kentucky Derby race. The walking club isn’t the only activity she enjoys at Album Benbrook.

After she gets off work, she enjoys using the onsite fitness center, and getting together with neighbors to do Pilates. She also enjoys socializing.

“I’m on the second floor, and have a very nice view from my balcony,” she said. “I can see the Fort Worth skyline. Every 4th of July, when the fireworks go off, I like to invite people over to my place to stand on the balcony and enjoy the show. It is marvelous,” said Passmore.

The 4th of July isn’t the only time of year when residents gather in each other’s apartments to socialize. Passmore says dozens of residents get together on a regular basis.

“We do it on Valentine’s, we do it on Christmas, we do it in the summer. We come to my apartment for drinks. We go to another apartment for appetizers, then we go to another apartment for desserts, and we don’t have to drive,” said Passmore.

The community also has Happy Hours every Tuesday, and Casino Night twice a year; and there’s a group that comes up with places to go and things to see that residents are invited to participate in. “You can do as much as you want, or nothing at all. There are just so many options,” said Passmore.
